The divorce rate is the U.S.A is very high. Psychologists, marriage counsellors and other pundits have attributed it to various factors including; marrying for the wrong reasons, lack of intimacy, finances, spousal cheating, and lacks of conflict solving skills. Although everyone agrees that the divorces rate is alarming, there is a lack of consensus on the actual divorce rate. There has been recent debates as to whether the actual divorce rate is what is highly quoted. It is regularly stated that there is a 50 per cent divorce rate in the U.S.A. Therefore, this study seeks to determine the divorce per 1,000 people in the U.S.A. The variable used will be a ratio variable since it has a true zero.
The population of interest is the number of divorce per 1,000 people in all states in the U.S.A. Therefore, the population size is the 50 states in the U.S.A. The sample will be selected randomly. Random samples eliminates any researcher’s bias in sampling. Therefore, it creates objectivity both in fact as well as in appearance. I plan to use survey data from the United States Census Bureau. The US Census Bureau frequently conducts surveys on various aspects in the U.S.A. The latest available data was availed in 2012 for census conducted in 2009. It provides the divorce per 1,000 people for all the 50 states in the U.S.A. This data source was chosen because it is reliable. In addition, a field collection of data on the subject will be unpractical because of limited financial resources and time constraint. The variable of interest is a ratio variable. Therefore, it is possible compute the mean. The mean will be computed to determine whether it is above or below the often quoted divorce rate.
