Dear Dr. Gibralter,
RE: ADDITIONAL PROGRAMS TO HELP THE FROSTBURG CAMPUS GO GREEN
Going green is inevitable and essential. Frostburg State University has adopted measures, programs, projects and policies that are aimed to keep the environment healthy and productive while reducing pollution as well as making the environment friendlier to human beings. However, as explained below, other universities have engaged in other measures that are beneficial in attaining the green goal. Florida State University and the University of South Carolina have environmental programs that can be implemented at Frostburg State University, thus improving the green initiative.
Florida State University, has realized that living a greener life can be cheap as well. In an effort to reduce costs, Florida has to take into considerations strategies followed by other universities that are not into its system. For instance, they have extended their conservation practices to using less gas, water, and energy. This has been missing in our university. They have extended their going green actions to advising their students and staff members on borrowing reusable resources such as books and not buying. Moreover these other universities monitor what they dispose as well as foodstuffs they consume. To this point, these are missing in the program currently at Frostburg State University. There is a need to implement these to the current program in the university to achieve better green goals. In our university, it would be more profitable if there was more attention paid to controlling gas, water and energy usage. Moreover, recycling is beneficial when possible, as well as completes utilization of electronic materials. Considerations on what to purchase and/or borrow are necessary. The university should consider purchasing easy to manage materials with low maintenance costs as well as borrowing on reusable materials such as textbooks.
The program adopted by the University of South Carolina would come in handy as well in improving the environmental consideration measures in Frostburg State University. The director of student development; in collaboration with the environmental program manager, have joined hands in this university with supporting going green and saving money in the process in the university. They have researched initiatives that end up paving the way for green advancement. For instance, they have replaced computer monitors with modern flat screen/LCD Computer Monitors which has resulted in saving $8,000 on the electric bill. Their initiatives have extended to detecting alternative vehicles whose fuel consumption is much lower. In addition, they have ensured that there are efficient washers and dryers that have recorded up to $19,600 savings. Furthermore, they have adopted a ‘Take It or Leave It- Move out Recycling’. Charitable organizations, the staff and the students come together to make the adoption of going green initiatives successful. The actions by the University of South Carolina has been one of the best go green strategies and looking at the initiatives adopted by this university, it is evident that they aim at conserving the environment at all ends which should be copied and applied in our university to produce better results when it comes to going green.
Since 2007, Frostburg State University has demonstrated and worked towards learning how to go green. There is need however, to employ the programs witnessed in Florida State University as well as University of South Carolina in an attempt to step up the initiatives and programs of making the campus much greener.
Raid Alotaibi.
