Environmentalist promotes a green culture and encourages people to adopt practices that are safe for the environment. Environmentalists’ actions benefit not only the environment, but all people living on this planet. Environmentalists emphasize on reduction of greenhouse emission and foster love towards nature. Their goal is to achieve sustainability by avoiding overuse of natural resources, and encouraging people to use renewable resources. Air pollution, noise and water pollution are major challenges that our planet is facing today. All these types of pollution damage health of a large population. Efforts made by environmentalists support the reduction of pollution and preservation of natural environments that ensure well-being of all living creatures and plants. Environmentalists also raise their voice against the projects that are harmful to the environment (Nebel & Wright, 1993).
Environmentalists ask people to adopt green practices that require time, energy and lots of money. If people want to make their house green in order to save electricity then, they have to invest a good sum of money. Going green also means that people need to safely dispose of the waste, they are required to separate the waste. People are also required to adopt the technology that can reduce the use of natural resources such as water, electricity and fossil fuels. Environmentalists sometimes make the issue bigger than what it is. It also includes criticizing projects that may not harm to the environment. Projects that are essential for economic development may get stuck due to litigations initiated by the environmentalists (Nebel & Wright, 1993).
The term, conservationism refers to organized efforts of preserving the environment, animals, plants and other natural species that need protection in order to exist. These efforts are so intensive that they take shape of the social, political and environmental movement. Conservationists save natural resources and help them exist on the planet earth by emphasizing on sustainability. Biodiversity is important for the earth and survival of all species as all are interrelated. Conservationists emphasize on protection of fisheries, wildlife, natural resources, and performing all efforts that can help in maintaining biodiversity. Conservationists across the world are trying their best efforts to protect wildlife and saving species that are on the verge of extinction. Increasing pollution and global warming impacting wildlife in a great way and making the work of Conservationists very important (Adams, 2003).
Conservationists are required to work very closely with the wildlife or marine ecosystem etc. Hence they are continuously under different types of threats. Conservationism is not only a difficult task, but it is also a costly affair and requires enormous resources. Conservationism may create problems for the development oriented projects. A number of projects have been facing hindrances because of over activism of conservationists across the world. Conservationism is not creating hindrances for bigger projects only, but it has also started pestering people who are living in particular areas since centuries (Adams, 2003).
Having observed a succinct analysis of both environmentalism and conservationism, I have decided to be a conservationists. The principal reason behind my decision is my impression that the role of Conservationists is much larger and important than the role of an environmentalist. Biodiversity and a better environment can be maintained by awaking people and maintaining all components of the ecosystem and environment. I believe that being Conservationists is like managing ecosystem, biodiversity and saving planet.
