Doody, O. D. (2012). Transformational leadership in nursing practice . Bitstream , 1-12.
This scholarly article demonstrates the fact that over time, over management of nurses has led to opportunities and exceptional challenges. This is based on the fact that, most organizations face numerous changes and thus, the need of flexible and adaptive leadership. The adaptive kind of leadership is referred to as transformational type of leadership management. In this leadership, the leader possesses deep set of ideas and internal values and this is used in motivation of followers (Doody, 2012).
In this case, the followers in the health sector provide quality care but do not consider their own interests. Their environment is made in such a way that it is supportive, and there is the share of responsibility. In this article, the use of transformational leadership style has been given priority and its application in the nursing industry. The four major components that have been used to analyze this leadership theory include inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, idealized influence and individual consideration (Doody, 2012).
Rogers, R. (2012). Leadership communication styles: a descriptive analysis of health care professionals. Journal of Healthcare Leadership , 1-11.
This journal article demonstrates that the leadership style as a management tool in the healthcare industry is vital as this is based on the fact that, the leaders under health care unit impact on the lives of many individuals. Patients rely on nurses and physicians during critical moments that can be used in compromising their lives. In this journal, research studies based on the issue of healthcare regulation and quality management in the past years have been investigated, and conclusions made on the various types of leadership management skills.
Rogers, (2012) in this study examines the styles that are used in the healthcare administrations and also the nurses and physicians that are head of departments. Rogers concluded into three major themes which include decision making, relationships and viewpoints from others on the leadership style. For example, the physicians viewpoints based on leadership are varied as much as they are aware that they have responsibilities and are leaders.
For the nurses, they mainly considered the notion that they were servant leaders hence the theory of servant leadership. According to the healthcare administrators, it was evident that they had the big picture of leadership. Leadership is thus considered to be a key concept in the management of all the activities that are carried out in the healthcare industry. Leadership cannot be ignored and is a vital component of for any job to process out (Rogers, 2012).
Oliver, S. (2006). Leadership in health care. Musculoskeletal Care , 38-45.
In this article, Oliver has considered using the National Health Service in relation to leadership management skills in the healthcare industry. According to Oliver, it is the duty of the NHS to provide a responsive and dynamic system of healthcare through having a workforce that can cope with any changes that may be frequent in any organization. In order to achieve a responsive and dynamic healthcare system clinicians have to demonstrate to NHS that they exhibit leadership skills through being role models under all the levels that health care may be required (Oliver, 2006).
The traditional culture of carrying out activities in NHS keeps changing according to the present factors. The changes include decentralization of health care services and changes in the society that may be due to change in form of organization and structural functions. The NHS has been accused of failing to tackle some of the key factors in the health care industry. They have encountered challenges in the implementation of complex and evolving issues within the system. The aim of this article is thus meant to give an overview of the key concepts that should be considered in leadership. The skills that are required in leadership are further evaluated through the using scenarios like that of NHS. For example, should the organization use servant leadership, transformational leadership or transactional theories of leadership? The best method to be used in this situation should be effective in the health care industry and also effective in working with teams (Oliver, 2006).
Leadership Theory Reflecting my Current Leadership Style
I have been using transactional theory form of leadership. In this leadership style, there is an emphasis between the relationship established by the leader and his or her followers. There is a contract based understanding that gives both parties priorities based on mutual understanding. The leader in this case administers recognition and rewards to the followers as a return for their commitment and loyalty in following specific instructions (Marshall & Marshall, 2011).
However, I would like to incorporate transformational form of leadership. In this case, the key concept to be considered is the change. The role of a leader in this scenario is to play a vital role in the implementation and to envision the transformation of an organization through improved performance. Therefore, in this case, the leader evaluates the situation that has been there before and incorporates new ideas that enhance the performance of healthcare industry through observing quality management strategies. Through the use of transformational theory type of leadership, I will be able to transform specific areas that require new ideas in leadership (Marshall & Marshall, 2011).
