(1). EMC Corporation, it is now commonly known as, is an information (hardware and software) technology company founded in in 1979 by Richard Egan and Roger Marino (Mellor). The original idea behind the founding of EMC, whose name was created by taking the first initial of the company’s founders, namely “E” and “M” and at attaching it to the first initial of corporation, was to provide increased memory capacity for the mini-computers of the first information technology revolution of the 1980s by supplying customers and manufactures with a proprietary version of a memory card (Mellor). As their business grew, EMC expanded into other areas of memory expansion, as well as content storage, such as hard disk drives, data protection and security, content management software, information technology consulting and ultimately in cloud computing.
Today EMC, which was acquired by Dell Computers this year, is one of the leading providers to businesses of cloud computing and online services. Some of it more unique products/services include the “hybrid cloud” which offers customers both remote administration of secondary aspects of their business with local control over more the business’ more “mission critical” aspects (EMC). To be sure, the increasing tendency for businesses to transition their information technology and computer need to the cloud bodes extremely well for EMC in the short, middle and long-term. This is especially true considering the EMC was one of the first companies to focus on the cloud computing sector. One of the key factors in EMC’s success has been its aggressive acquiring of smaller companies that broaden its expertise and add value to its assets. The acquisition of VMware is illustrative of this point. VMware is a company that specializes in optimizing cloud computing efficiency and, in essence, transforming the power and abilities of a physical computer into a software application (VMware).
The corporate structure of EMC is unique. At the top level, it is a fully autonomous subsidiary of Dell Computers. In turn, in addition to its core products and services, it is also the parent company to a number or subsidiary corporate entities such as VMware. Accordingly, while it has significant independence in its decision-making both to its core products/services as well as those of is subsidiaries, ultimate control is retained by Dell. Nevertheless, EMC is an extremely profitable company. According to Yahoo! Finance, EMC has been enjoyed consistently positive reactions as illustrated in its trading price with as of this day is up .01 percent (Yahoo! Finance).
(2). My reasons for wanting to work for EMC are threefold. First, EMC seems to be one of the most energetic technology companies currently in existence. To be sure, while other companies seem to be looking for their “next big thing”, EMC has already found it in cloud computing. Moreover, the development of cloud computing has just recently begun so there is so much potential for the company. Second, I believe that my skill set is precisely fitted to what EMC wants to accomplish. Third, I believe that by working at EMC I will be exposed to circumstances and opportunities for self-realization and development that I will never have at another organization.
(3). My five questions for a recruiter would be: (1) How does EMC’s acquisition by Dell affect the daily work environment of a EMC staffer? (2) What are the opportunities of advancement in EMC? (3) What are the possibilities to transfer among EMC owned organizations such as between EMC and VMware? (4) Since the acquisition, what is the likelihood of a change in direction for the firm? (5) What are the development opportunities of a newly hired data analyst. My five questions for a hiring manager would be: (1) What is the likelihood that Dell will decide to lay-off staff at EMC? (2) How would you describe the corporate culture at EMC? (3) Do you feel that Dell’s and EMC’s corporate cultures are the same? (4) If Dell’s and EMC’s corporate cultures are not the same, what is the likelihood that EMC’s will become more like that of Dell? (5) What do you see as the future of EMC’s core service, namely cloud computing, for a new worker such as myself?
