Introduction
In the contemporary society, on average, a normal person lives 99.9 percent of their lives in devoid of the actual conscious contact that is sensed with the magnificent nature. Most people spend most their times indoors. For instance, people spend almost 95 percent indoors without time to explore the beautiful nature provided for human beings. In most cases, people build relationships, but diverted from nature. The disconnection from nature deludes human beings from thinking that disconnecting with the nature does not negatively affect the daily life existence. It is because even if people do not explore the nature, they still can think and retain their intelligence. The disconnection of the human being from nature creates more problems that gains and thus needs a solution that will balance the entire equation rather than creating a gap. On the other hand, most ecopsychologists in relation to human and nature disconnection argue that the human seems somehow separated from human nature and many more other factors. According to the ecopsychologists, the human nature’s existence of disconnection is with the modern people in the society.
The evidence is real as mentioned earlier; most people live or spend most their time in the houses. For instance, people can stay the whole day watching TV or enjoying a movie, video games, and many other indoor activities. Additionally, it is evident that most human beings would rather go to the theme parks than go visiting national parks. Just to mention, the disconnection can lead to some problems, according to the ecopsychologists. Such issues include the destructive behavior. In that, it means that the separation from nature seen as ecological problems. Human depression, anger, anxiety, addiction and many more are seen as problems in human life. These particular problems are as a result of disconnecting from nature. Social collective problems and crisis is also considered to be as a result of human disconnection from nature. Such social related problems are violence, sexism; racism seems to bring an alienation of human beings from nature.
In conjunction with Aristotle Nicomachean, human nature, and its relation are both very crucial. According to Nicomachean, for the human beings to discover the happiness that is brought about by being a human is to discover the human nature happiness. Human happiness goes hand in hand with a person discovering the function of an individual towards nature. With this notion, the human beings can eventually achieve the happiness by fulfilling the specific natural function. Nicomachean philosophical and ethical approach is the inquiry into the nature and the relationship between the human being versus good life for them. The notion about human and nature concepts can outline and explains their remedial to create a wonderful relationship between human and nature. In the modern life, people are much away from the concept of human and nature relationship. Unlike the past human beings such as the ancestors, they lived their entire lives with a strong relationship with nature. For instance, they attained their daily meal by associating themselves with nature, for example, by hunting, fishing, and gathering. In the current world we are, in order for human beings to live and survive, we believe one must go to school. Additionally, get a degree in the University, and eventually, get a job. The job enables the human being to earn money; the money as then taken to the bank to buy things that we need. The aspect of hunting may be in the forest for our daily food is far from human brains, and that plays a part in disconnecting a human being from nature. In some instance a person who is not at work on a particular day, would go to the sea and feel awkward. The funny feeling is that they are on the sea to fish while they feel that they are supposed to be in the office working. If many people would be frank, they have a very perfect relationship with money than they relate to nature.
In addition to this nightmare of human and nature disconnection, people are just plugged into their computers and laptops almost at all times. The new technology has become a major human entertainer at homes. It is a good thing to be digital. There is no doubt about it, but the more people just use all their time in the house glued on TV and computers, and the more they get disconnected from other people and the nature itself. In the modern life, some people hate what they do for a living even if they do it for survival. In that case, that is why one can get people always on TV to feel entertained and distracted. It is now clear that people are spending all their entire time on the social network sites, watching television or even playing video games. Through this process, people have forgotten the essences of nature and its real factor significance. People should disconnect from technology and connect to nature since it has more and real benefits rather than just sitting indoors the entire day watching a cartoon series (Seaward, 143).
Possible Causes of Human and Nature Disconnection
There have been many ideologies on the origin of human and nature disconnection in all places in regard to modern life. Some are from people and psychologists, for instance, people argue that the separation of human beings from nature was as a result of plant and animal domestication by the early agriculturists and pastoralists. Other people also relate the human and nature disconnection by the first development of the first cities. The concept of early life and modern one, hunting and gathering was the main connection of people and nature, which is a different scenario in modern life. As a result of emerging cities, people stopped to practice the traditional ways of looking for daily bread. As a result, the connection started to get weak and thereafter human beings flocked into the cities looking for other survival means.
On the other hand, some people argue that the disconnection came from the beginning of language and the first tools. The evolution of tools brought about the bad relation of human and nature relationship. All this changed the contemporary human behaviors.
Another factor seen as the root to the disconnection of human and nature relationship is the Christian religion tradition. In the past, many people used to worship their supreme being in relation to plants and animals. After the introduction to Judea- Christianity, people shifted to the traditional worship to the modern one. Consequence of literacy and civilization of human beings relates to the Christian essence of tradition abandoning, and therefore, disconnecting from nature drastically.
Additionally, many other people view the disconnection of human and nature as a result of the rationalism, industrial revolution, and all the entire enlightening. There has been a drastic enlightenment among the modern people. For instance, the industries have largely lost affection to the environment. For instance, the nature destructions with harmful chemicals and cutting of trees have led to the nature disconnection between people and nature.
The Western civilization that emphasis on capitalism, colonialism and the industrial revolution has greatly affected the relationship between nature and human negatively leaving humans separated from nature. However, the life of a human being is dynamic and not static; as a result, others view the disconnection of human beings and the nature as a stage of life. They consider the relationship that we once had, but now it is no more.
Separation Models
Different writers, as well as a philosopher, have argued on the different models of human and nature separation. For instance, Sheppard, who is a writer, sees the separation model of human beings from nature as a result of lack of enough maturity of modern people (Cohen, 134).
Another model of separation is the act of language, cognition, as well as transpersonal or psychodynamic processes. Greenway suggests that language dualistic does separate human beings from nature.
Nicomachean’s Summary of Ethics in Relation to Human and Nature Disconnection
In relation to human consciousness of the nature and human existence, human beings need to have or acquire virtues that will help to bring them back to the real existence of human and nature world. Nicomachean has been able to explain the virtues that the human being ought to possess to make the relationship of human beings and nature come true, and also, stronger. Ethical virtue considered as the aspect of disposing of a habit with the aim of doing a certain action by deliberate choice without anyone choosing you to do so. It is not just an element of orders, but also making it a habit of acting well in the right manner always. When people can come to their senses and associate themselves with the nature, then the actions will be accelerated by the good virtues since by doing so, it becomes a noble action. In addition, prudence is significant since it is an intellectual way a person is in a position to the actual specifications of each activity or situation. In this case, our situation being nature and human disconnection issue.
Therefore, in the aspect of making things right with nature, the actions towards the connection should be voluntary. It is because only actions done voluntarily are considered as virtuous (Aristotle, 78).
Virtues towards Connecting With Nature
The first virtue is changing the disconnection of human and nature to connect bravery. It is a character between cowardice and rashness. For us to change the environment, people must not fear to do the right thing, and at the same time, face all the possible fears in a brave manner. For instance, a person associating him or herself with the nature, such as swimming in the ocean or hunting in the forest. It may be seen like an abnormal thing to do in the modern life. However, a brave person should not mind what people think as along he or she is doing what is noble.
The other important virtue is temperance. Temperance stands between the aspects of the pleasures of the body. In the real world, people get discouraged when they try something and fail of success. They forget never to try again. For the people to connect with the nature, they must be ready to try and also sometimes fail. That should not keep down from trying again. However, the aim of losing feels terrible; the human beings should try a little harder (Fujimori, 34).
The other virtue is the magnificence; this is an act associated with offering and giving in very large amounts when necessary. The kind of a man who can practice this character can fulfill the call of nature that is creating a godly relationship with it. The virtue enables a person to use what he or she has without calculating their costs. For instance, this kind of a man can decide to tour around the world to watch animal and also discover the glory of nature and its existence. With the virtue, he cannot mind the cost since the activity is worth spending a lot of money, time and energy (Mulak, 453).
In addition, the other Magnanimity, this is the other Aristotle talks about. Magnanimous person is a person who deserves honor. In this case, a man who does not necessarily deserve honor and claims them, is considered as vain. Whereas a person, who deserved the honor, and he does not claim them, is considered as low-minded. It is important to be claimed vain rather than being low-minded. It is because the vanity can be rectified by the life experiences; this man can live a good life since he has many virtues altogether. The other virtue is the aspect of friendliness that evolves lack of quarrelsomeness and obsequiousness. A person should be friendly with the nature so as to the real significance of its course of the human life. The human beings should take care of the environment just like they stay in their houses watching movies and taking care of their laptops and other electronic gadgets (Lindenmaye 47).
Conclusion
In conclusion, all the origin stories, the separation and the virtues are all kinds of metaphors trying to explain the nightmare of human and nature disconnection. In that connection to that, different stories and believes have a different understanding. All these different ideologies are more plausible than others. The difficult thing in this entire scenario, maybe, half of it is true, and people have produced the other fiction since all the possible reasons and in some cases, they can get biased. We all are seeking answers to the reason for the disconnection of human beings and nature to which we may know or not know. The separation has its consequences to the human beings and the nature, as well. In the respective pragmatic perspective of carrying out either environmental or psychotherapy activism, we ought to engage ourselves with the significant theoretical differences that will enable us to solve some of the issues. The activity of searching the truth information on the disconnection of human and nature is on and will continue to be in progress since the world is dynamic.
