Homelessness is caused by various factors which are classified as either personal causes or structural causes. Personal causes can either be; individual factors, family background factors and institutional background factors. Individual factors are debts, poor mental and physical health, lack of qualifications and involvement in crime. Family background factors include family conflicts, breakups and divorce, childhood abuse, physical or sexual abuse during adolescence and prior homelessness experience. Institutional background factors are denial of freedom due to imprisonment and rehabilitation. Structural causes are both economic and social in nature and a family or an individual cannot control them. Structural causes include poverty, un employment, lack of affordable housing among others (Beckford, 2009). Problematic and controversial Issues that affect the members of a community morally are termed as social evils. Social evils pose harm and danger to the community. There are many social problems resulting from long term drug use and social factors. These social issues include Abortion, Alcoholism, child abuse, child labor, rape, racism, suicide, terrorism stereotyping among others.
Alcohol abuse and Alcoholism are as a result of various factors such as social environment, physical, emotional, health and genetics. Most people suffering from mental and emotional health such as depression and anxiety use alcohol to self-medicate. Alcoholism and alcohol abuse leads to different social evils such as rape, increases child mortality levels and leads to divorce, neglect of responsibilities; unintentional accidents such as drowning, car crash, burns, falls and general conflicts; intentional injuries including fire arm injuries, sexual assault, domestic violence, loss of productivity in work place; health problems including liver diseases, nerve damage, sexual related problems and brain damage (Barrett, 2011).
Following the effects of alcoholism this study is aimed at exploring the possible measures to curb alcoholism in order to reduce the social evils resulting from it. Overcoming alcoholism and alcohol addiction is not easy and it feels impossible. Some of the benefits that alcohol users claim to derive from the addictive drug include; helping them forget their problems, they drink for fun, some perceive it as a way of relaxing and unwinding after stress. Some of the problems relating to use of alcohol include relationship problems, depression, anxiety and shame, neglect of responsibilities, loss of jobs among others.
It is very important and necessary to carry out other research on measures/strategies to curb alcoholism reducing the social evils resulting from it. Alcoholism has greatly affected the level of productivity in the society (Barker, 2012). Alcohol addicts waste a lot of precious time that they would otherwise use in development. Other resources such as time and money are wasted in fighting alcoholism in creation of awareness and treatment of the victims.
