Introduction
Nursing as a career requires an effective communication, which is an essential skill in such a consultative careers, which involves a direct interaction with the client. behavioral nursing not only requires a good communication skill but is requires the art of communication which involves finding a style that is well suiting to the clinician and also yields fruits fir the doctor and patient. A nursing phenomenon of interest (POI) can therefore be defined as any factor that influences health status and is relevant to nursing. These phenomena relate to all the different aspects of human behavior and functioning; the phenomena can relate to an individual patient, the family unit, the community, or an entire population.
This paper is about the nursing phenomenon of interest (POI) of which the phenomenon of interest that has been identified is Therapeutic communication. This also addresses the significance of therapeutic communication to the area of practice supported by evidence from the existing literature. In addition it also contains the basic philosophical approach to life and work and how the viewpoints impact the therapeutic communication. It also describes how the topic impacts the quest to search for the truth about therapeutic communication. This includes the opposing philosophical viewpoint about therapeutic communication and the way in which it relates to the profession and this phenomenon of interest (Jensen, 2012). Merits for the continental viewpoint are also among the contents in the paper. Finally, a summary of the four ways identified by Carper and a discussion on how these four ways of knowing will impact the advanced nursing practice also forms the major discussions in this paper.
Therapeutic communication is the process in which a nurse, through nonverbal and or verbal communication, helps a client to a better understanding. This therefore is achieved by employing specific strategies that motivates a patient to express his or her ideas and feelings in such a manner that conveys respect and acceptance.
The significance of therapeutic communication is that firstly, it helps in facilitating the client autonomy. Thee various techniques that are often used like active listening always infer a sense of independence on a patient or client. This helps to create a platform for mutual understanding between the client and the healthcare professional without making assumption about the client. The patient also grows confident and comfortable to share potentially even very difficult information. This therefore makes the healthcare professional to properly utilize this information in order to assist the client for a detailed investigation of his own options and feelings (Grover, 2008, 180).
It also creates a nonjudgmental environment. This helps in creating trust between the health care professional and the client and thus not only facilitates a very constructive communication but also encourages autonomy and confidence. This therefore makes it much easier to identify the problem that the client could have been suffering from with such kind of an environment.
It is also significant in terms of providing the professional with a holistic view of their client. A person always exists within a network of friends, family and healthcare professionals. This therefore means that therapeutic communication mainly emphasize on the holistic view of the client and the network of people who provide support to them. The experiences of the client cannot be ignored because they are the ones that are often used to develop the therapeutic relationship which teaches the individual to learn the necessary communication skills with other people.
It also helps in reducing the risk of unconscious influence the professional. The therapeutic communication involves the development of acute awareness of what the client is saying as well as identifying any nonverbal cues that the client may be using as they express themselves. This together with also being keen on your voice of intonation will thus create a healthy communication with the client.
The philosophical approach of life and career is to be the best nurse that the worlds needs. This involves having a heart and a desire to be the solution provider; to put an everlasting smile on the faces that has for so long suffered a lot of agony and stigmatization by the societies of their own. In life, the drive is to make a difference on the face of this earth and to create forth an impact that shall remain to inspire the generations upon generations to come. Based on therapeutic communication, a nurse is considered a beacon of hope to the hopeless clients and patients who seek the professional assistance and to develop a heart for compassion and empathy for the good of the clients. The main drive is to become a leading professional in terms of work ethics and to uphold unto integrity (Sanders, 2009).
This philosophical view to life and work impacts the chosen POI in the following ways. One, therapeutic communication requires a high level for the respect human dignity .this therefore makes it easier to understand and to grasp the concept concerning this area of specialization and also enhance the general growth of the career. Secondly, integrity means keeping whatever the client reveals to you a secret in order to build trust and mutual understanding. This shall enhance the general effectiveness to the professionalism and also in achieving the positive results while diagnosing and treating the patients.
Integrity makes one to become more of a result oriented nurse not money oriented and also to uphold unto the work ethics. Integrity assists in this nursing phenomenon of interest in that it helps to integrate the importance and application of integrity on therapeutic communication. In addition, the philosophical approach also helps on being the best nurse the world needs give me the desire also to do the best in this area of therapeutic communication.
The philosophical view of life and work impacts the way to search for the truth as outlined. The belief and passion for integrity makes this paper to be the original work of my hands through proper research and analysis. It develops the interest to dig deeper into the phenomenon of practice to develop a proper knowledge and skill that shall be relevant to the professional. It has also impacts the search for truth in such a manner that makes me to explore all the avenues that t the therapeutic communication has been applied and also the areas applicable so as to come up with an innovation of better ways of service delivery through therapeutic communication throughout the nursing career. The truth about this also helps me to identify the relevant avenues that this therapeutic communication can be effectively applied in addition to other methods and strategies that have also been found in order to impact a change in the behavioral health sector.
The contradicting philosophical approach to therapeutic therapy is that proper communication skills that are needed in this field depends on the individual nurse and the passion they develop towards acquiring these skills. This therefore impacts this nursing field in that the general nursing is evaluated on what each one of the individual nurses do and the results that they deliver in the long run. The merits of continental philosophy are that it cuts across the globe and so this brings about uniformity to the nursing profession across the globe. In terms of ethics and the moral codes of conduct, it also helps to create a harmony of the general nursing ethics across the globe (Schwartz, 2015).
The ways of knowing are as follows: the first way of knowing is empirics which refer to the science of nursing. The science of nursing involves all that pertains to being equipped with the necessary knowledge that helps in the general practice of the nursing profession. The importance of this knowing empiric in terms of developing the career is to ensure that one is properly equipped with appropriate content that shall thus be of a great significance in the general practice of the nursing (Luomala, 2002).
The second way of knowing does the Esthetic know. Carper describes that esthetic knowing as follows, “The primary concern of Esthetic knowing is rooted in the need to understand the lived experience of patient, family, or community seeking the nurse's help. Qualitative data plays a central role in this pattern of knowing.” (Carper, 2013). This esthetic knowing therefore helps to impact the nursing career to be effective in terms of service delivery and also in being the real solution that the clients may need. Also, by understanding the patient well, it gives a nurse an easy time to evaluate and to administer proper diagnosis to the patient.
Subsequently, Jackson et al (2009) describes Ethical knowing as a moral component focusing on what ought to be done or what we are obliged to do as professional nurses. The development of strong codes of conduct in the nursing profession is what can impact the nursing career into being effective in service delivery and also in terms of creating s good image of the nursing profession. Therapeutic communication requires a lot of these high standards of ethics in order to ensure that the clients can feel accepted and can also develop trust with the nurse attending to them (Zander, 2005).
Finally, Personal knowing, which “is the self-reflection required to be fully "in the moment" with the patients in our care”, Carper (2013), is an essential component of knowing if authentic helping relationships are in the therapeutic environment. This affects the nursing career to have an improved service delivery to the patients by recognizing the emotional aspects expressed by the clients.
