In this law marijuana has been legalized in specific amounts. Authorized persons can use, posses and even trade with the cannabis. The law is however restricting the handling of cannabis to people above the age of 21. Under the I-502, dealers are registered as legal business and taxed for their operation. The tax from these operations is the used to educate the public and fight against drug and substance abuse (Ellison, par 2).
In personal effects, the number of under aged people who will be exposed to cannabis is disturbing. Before the initiative 502, cannabis was the most abused drug among the under aged population in the United States. With its legalization in one state the drug will be peddled to a greater number of under aged people. According to Johnson (par, 3) this statistics will further increase when the cannabis business is completely established and operational.
The level of addiction to drug abuse is rampant among cannabis users. With the legalization of the drug the youths in the United States will face a high addiction rate since the drug would be high. Youths across the states will find easy to access and abuse the drug.
According to Johnson (par, 4) initiative 502 will be of great significance in the promotion of drug addiction in United States. With maturity age being 22 and 23 and 25 and 25 in women and men respectively, the age provided in initiative of 21 years is not enough to ensure the youth are addiction free (Reed, par 4).
With the effects of other drugs in the US on the youth being significant, initiative 502 has increased the depth at which this generation will be infested by the effects of drugs.
