Basic definition of respect involves strong admiration for someone based on his character or qualities in doing different things. Respect is used in different aspects of the human lives interaction. The word respect is frequently used when advising young children and nurturing them to become outstanding individuals. Parents will normally tell children to respect older people, authority, their teachers or police officers. In many cases, respect is normally addressed from a positive aspect only. This means that only good things can only illicit respect. However, respect can be used both in negative and positive perspectives. This essay tries to address the definition of respect in terms of not interfering with people’s privacy and right to do their own thing, whether, morally right or wrong, but within the confines of the law. However, respect may be used contrary to the rule of law. Respect refers to the acknowledgement of other people’s right of free will and choice.
Respect can be viewed from the perspective of the state or government of a nation in honoring its will to the people. The bill of rights provides a common example of respect for others people’s right of free will and choice. The government is obligated to ensure that it does not interfere with a person’s free will of association and worship.
Parents need to show respect to the choices their children make in terms of university education and the selection of their wives. Many parents fail to respect their children’s partners because of a certain attributes they may be portraying. Despite their being good intentions backing their interference, parents need to show respect by letting their children make their own choices. This then also makes the children to respect their parents even more.
Respect can also be experienced out of fear. This is when someone authority is so intense that people are afraid to go against his will. Gangsters and mobsters are respected in their circles and feared by the public. Respect among gang members is of high importance. A person’s reputation in terms of crime and killings makes him earn respect among his gang members.
Respect can also be applied to evaluate a person’s worth. This is normally referred to as self-respect. A person’s ability to respect his identity involves doing things that do not undermine a person’s value. Refusing to engage in illegal or immoral acts is a sign of self-respect. Further, self-respect entails avoiding doing permissible things. In most cases, people who have self-respect are able to respect others more easily compared to people who lack self-respect.
The term respect can be applied in a number of contexts. The normal contexts of parenting and obeying the law have been acknowledged. However, the use of the term respect has then been used in a number of other situations. Criminals will commit crimes to earn respect among their peers and leaders may demand forceful respect from their followers by instilling fear. These examples indicate that respect is not only applied in the context of good acts but also in bad acts. How one defines respect, depends on the environmental upbringing and cultural norms of society the individual lives. Thus, respect may be earned by either acting with integrity or dishonesty based on the different definition of respect in that society.
