The club which one is part of in school organized a musical concert. In order to promote the concert, a decision has to be made as to what media form will be used to advertise it. Numerous suggestions were given by the club members. Some preferred advertising through radio stations and newspapers. Others wanted to distribute flyers among the students while others favor using social media like Twitter and Facebook. Another group wanted to send emails to the different club organizations in the school. A small group preferred putting posters in record bars and music stores.
At first, it seemed so difficult to resolve the issue. But after hearing the varying views of the different groups, it became easier to solve the conflict. Each member to the club listened attentively to what each group has to say. Although there were dissenting opinions, what is noteworthy is that each one respected each other’s opinions and are open to a compromise. The advantages and disadvantages of each option was analyzed and presented in a table. The collaborating strategy was used to solve the conflict. One thinks that the strategy implemented generated healthy responses to the conflict because every alternative was studied to determine which will work best for the concert.
When one raised the idea of advertising in local newspapers, several members resisted the idea because of the cost involved. They pointed out that there are various forms of advertisements available now that will not require a single centavo of expense for the club. They were referring to using the internet and social media. The point was well taken.
The conflict was finally resolved by using a combination of advertising options. Twitter and Facebook and emails were the bulk of the promotion activities. Some members of the club who had friends in record bars, stores and radio stations volunteered to help by requesting their friends to promote the concert in exchange for free tickets.
If one had a friend in the middle of a conflict, one would advise him to have an open mind. It is always best to listen to the views of other people because they might have something worthwhile to say. In any conflict, one group does not necessarily have to lose or win because it can be resolved through a win-win solution.
