Review on Quinn, Michelle. "Ladies Who Like It; Porn Loses Stigma for Women as Mores Change and Erotica Caters to Their Tastes." Mercury News [San Jose] 5 Sept. 2003: 1G. LexisNexis Academic [LexisNexis]. Web. 27 May 2016.
For the last few decades, the female interest towards sex and sexuality has significantly increased. The modern role of women and their opportunities to act on a par with men abolished the times when sex industry was oriented just to males and female sexuality was considered to be something shameful. Nowadays, all famous porn websites have a special category of porn videos for women, and sex shops suggest a wide variety of clothes, toys, and other things that aim to increase a woman’s sexuality and her sexual attractiveness in the eyes of her man and to variegate their sexual life. The positive sexuality and the ability to express it through behavior and clothes gave women more self-confidence and made them feel more feminine and desired.
Indeed, the changes in the porn industry and women’s expressions of their sexuality should not cause negative reactions. On the one hand, they increase the porn industry’s revenues, and on the other hand, the realization of their sexuality helps women physically and emotionally. Even if we have different perceptions of sexuality, all of us are humans, and sex is a natural desire of human beings. If men can express this desire, who said that women cannot express it also? One can also mention that not all women like gentle porn; some of them have hidden desires regarding dominants and submissions and like the same porn as men. It is a question of personal preferences. Sexuality is not disgraceful; it is natural.
Review on Do, Vinh. “Pushing for a Broad Gay and Lesbian Movement: Virtual Equality; The Mainstreaming of Gay and Lesbian Liberation.” UNSW International Examiner, May 14, 1996.
Twenty years have passed since the times Vinh Do wrote his article, and for these years, the role of the LGBT community has significantly changed. While the second half of the 1990s marked the beginnings of the American LGBT community making, one can say that our times symbolize the beginnings of its flourish.
Have LGBT activists gained an increased societal acceptance of homosexuality Vinh Do wrote about? The answer to this question is rather obvious: yes, they have. To prove this, we can compare modern rights of the LGBT community members with the ones they had at the end of the twentieth century. The important changes in the societal position of the LGBT community started at the beginning of the twenty-first century. In 2003, the Supreme Court investigated the famous case of Laurence v. Texas and abolished all American anti-sodomy laws. In 2004, Massachusetts legalized marriages for the same-sex couples. In 2015, the Supreme Court recognized the right to marry to be fundamental and, thus, legalized same-sex marriages across the country. That achievement gave same-sex couples an opportunity to establish equal legal relations with adopted children, which amount has increased almost three times since the 1990s. It definitely was the most important victory of LGBT.
However, despite all achievements and increased societal acceptance, the LGBT community experiences lots of problems. Has it become more homogenous since 1996? Do the LGBT activists fight against racism, sexism, and economic injustice Vinh Do wrote about? It is hard to answer these questions. Indeed, the American LGBT movements advocate for the equality of social rights, but can this goal be pursued in full if the LGBT community continues to experience internal racial conflicts as it does now? The LGBT community members still have a lot of problems to solve.
