I find vision of tolerance is ethical and useful, because with vision of tolerance, Locke promoted toleration for religious beliefs of alternative religions. Locke is, however, of the view that the use of force by the government or state in order to compel people to practice a particular religion is illegal or unlawful. Further, he emphasizes on separation of state and church as he argues that the role of government is to manage external affairs of well-being of individuals, and the role of church is to manage internal affairs in an effectual manner. In my opinion, Locke’s tolerance vision is useful as well as ethical because it advices the government to respect religious freedom of individuals. Locke considers all human beings equal, and it is not a right action to take away anything from other individuals. Further, I find vision ethical as it promoted understanding of association between religion and government. He also stresses on unity of people and religion for ensuring a civilized society. In this way, Locke also promotes the idea of equality, which also paves the way to idea of tolerance of religion.
There are several considerations according to which some religious communities can be treated as intolerable. The communities in which there is no support and assistance for tolerance, and in which the faith and beliefs are not kept with heretics are regarded are intolerable. This can b e considered from the letter of Locke regarding Free Religion that Catholics were considered as tolerable because they mentioned that they will perform all the functions in accordance with the rules and laws of the country. They could be considered as intolerable when they disobey rules and regulations prevailing in the country. The intolerable communities become involve in civil obedience, because they do not have toleration for other religions, and Locke mentioned that toleration helps in preventing civil obedience. Furthermore, they also become involve in creation of civil troubles, because non-toleration leads to creation of civil disorders. Furthermore, from Locke’s viewpoints it is evident that the communities focusing on force for creating a necessary or required change for salvation, as Locke described that force is not an effectual element for creation of change that is necessary for salvation. This is because of the fact that force can lead to persuasion of obedience, but it does not play significant role in changing beliefs of individuals.
In my opinion, it is not acceptable for religious beliefs of individuals to exert their influence on administration of law. This is because some religions try to affect laws so that the religion can also be imposed on uninterested parties, which is not acceptable. But, as a matter of fact, it also acceptable in some cases as for example, in Islamic countries, when any government tries to impose non-Islamic beliefs on individuals who follow Islamic rules and regulations, then it is not bearable, and in this case people have the right to affect administration of law, because they should be allowed freedom to follow the beliefs and traditions in accordance with their will and wish, because freedom is natural right of individuals. According to Locke, government should be responsible for protecting rights of individuals. He, however, wanted to have a government that allow people to participate in decision making process, and that is acceptable to all people. Locke disliked the concept of absolute monarchy.
