The world of children is totally different from the world of adults. Nevertheless, children just the same way have a lot of benefits and temptations around which can greatly affect their future life. However well parents are trying to make their life safer, there are circumstances which represent a serious danger for kids. They include such places as schools, city parks, restaurants and cafes, etc. Whenever a child goes, he may encounter or try something bad. One of such dangers is sugary food, which may cause many problems with health, especially in a child organism. Unfortunately, parents cannot control this aspect of life without total twenty-four hour control, which is, obviously, impossible. That’s why it was proposed to ban sugary food for children in school, cities, and restaurants. This issue has many opponents and proponents. The opponents state that sugary food must not be prohibited in public places and believe that sugary food is essential for growing children as a part of their everyday diet. The proponents consider sweet food to be too harmful and unhealthy for children and state that it should not be given to children unless it is allowed by the parents and the doctors beforehand.
Plenty of information exists to validate the concerns of the opposition of banning sugary food. First of all, it is a significant source of energy, which is especially important for children. Since they spend most of their time moving around and using their body and mind (for example, at school), they need enough power not to fall asleep in the corridor. Our body and brain develop extensively in the childhood and demand much more energy than later, in adulthood, or especially in the old age. Secondly, sweets help to stay in a good mood, which is another essential aspect of a child’s life. And who wouldn’t like to see his beloved kid happy and delighted when he or she eats a chocolate bar or an ice cream? Of course, these features of sugary food make many parents and children buy sweets, chocolate, marmalade, etc. But we shouldn’t forget about other characteristics of sweets and consider all aspects to make a right decision.
On the other hand, the proponents of banning such food in public places believe that sugar may have more shortcomings than benefits and that this issue requires more profound study. To support their viewpoint, they introduce a few weighty arguments. First and foremost, it is widely acknowledged that sugar is a dangerous substance; it must be treated with safety in order not to harm the organism. And a child’s organism is especially vulnerable for such food. There are many evidences of children with saccharine diabetes, caries, pathometabolism and other diseases which were triggered off by excessive sugar consumption. And here another argument appears – control. Even if parents carefully look after their children’s diet and limit sweet food at home, they cannot control what their children eat in the school canteen, in cafes with friends or what they buy in supermarkets with large assortment and total freedom of choice. Besides, these eating habits lay the foundation of future diet of a person and thus open the door to various health problems, doctors, and hurtful treatments, and so on and so forth. But today only parents take care of these habits and explain children what is good and what is not. The proponents believe that if schools and cafes do not want to teach children these rules, they should not sell sweets to children at all, and the only way for them to eat chocolate is to ask their parents to buy it.
Clearly, both opponents and proponents of banning sweet food for children have well-supported arguments for their positions. Certainly, we cannot say that total prohibition will ensure healthy diets of children, since it is only one of the many aspects which contribute to this problem. However, we must acknowledge that sugary food is an essential part of everyday menu and it must be present in a kid’s life but it is also a dangerous thing which must be controlled by both parents, schools, cafes, shops, and other public places, where children can buy sweet food. We require special work on this problem and certain steps which will help us to grow up a strong and healthy person. For example, there can be special food which can be sold for children, whereas the other sweets will be sold only to grown-ups; or vice versa, some products may be marked as banned for selling to children. Moreover, schools can work out special diet for canteens which will include more healthy food and will limit sugary food as much as possible. Furthermore, teachers can collect the necessary data about their pupils’ health recommendations and control the distribution of sweet food in school. Thus, we must admit that both parties of this argument have significant and heavy arguments which must be taken into consideration before any decision is made. Only cooperative profound, comprehensive, and thorough analysis can help us to solve this problem. Nevertheless, first of all, we must recognize that the problem exists and sugar food consumption needs special treatment and limitations.
