Introduction
Smoking occurs as one of the widely discussed topics across various settings all over the world. This can be attributed to the effects that smoking has on the overall health of smokers and those who live with smokers. Smoking mainly refers to the act of smoking cigarette and other tobacco containing substances. In addition, smoking can occur in cases where someone smokes certain substances such as marijuana. As previously mentioned, smoking has a negative effect on the smokers as well as those who live with the smokers. For people who live with smokers, they are affected because they inhale second hand smoke from the smokers. The recent past has experienced a significant rise in smoking cases in collages, and this has prompted the development of notions as to whether smoking bans should be implemented in colleges or not. Evidently, there are various reasons as to why colleges should be made smoke-free by banning smoking within campuses.
Discussion
The first reason as to why smoking should be banned in campus premises aligns with the fact that smoking has serious health effects. Precisely, smoking is considered a significant health hazard that results in the occurrence of long term illnesses, which can lead to death. Notably, when someone smokes within the campus, the non-smokers are at more risk of smoking large amounts of second hand smoke, which affects their health by causing respiratory illnesses and other disease such as cancer. It is certainly unfair for smokers to put the non-smokers at risk of such diseases because of their smoking behaviour. The smokers are not spared by the mentioned effects. In fact, they also suffer from specific diseases resulting from smoking such as asthma and lung cancer. For this reason, the negative effects caused by smoking can be prevented by making campus smoke free. This can be attained by banning smoking within campus.
Another reason that justify the reason as to why collages should be made to be smoke-free environments is the fact that smoking has been linked the occurrence of sight impairment and blindness. Researches carried out in the recent past indicate that incidences of sight impairments and blindness amongst active smokers and passive smokers are many. Passive smokers refer to people who smoke second hand smoke because they live close to the smokers. Evidently, nicotine that is found in commonly smoked substances elicits the occurrence of sight impairment and blindness. Therefore, cases of sight impairments and blindness that occur in college as a result of smoking can be prevented by banning smoking in campus premises. On another note, campus should be made smoke free because smoking can cause fires, which can destroy campus property. This is because there are cases where smokers leave lit cigarettes, which can start a fire. Overall, there is the need to make colleges smoke-free because of the negative implications of smoking.
