Compare and contrast Venus in Furs the Movie and Novel
Introduction
“Venus in fur” is a much-admired movie that was released in the year 2013. Roman Polanski directed this movie is known for its vivid portrayal of feminist issues. The movie is based on a novel “Venus in Furs” by Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch. The novel was written and published in the year 1870. The movie starts with audition for the role of Wanda von Dunayev. The director, shown in the movie, is thinking that all actresses are inadequate to perform the role, but suddenly Vanda Jordan enters and convince director about her performance and capabilities to perform the role of leading female character.
Like novel, movie shows that women are capable of performing the role. In the movie, the entry of Wanda is performed in same way as it is described in the novel; the director is talking over the phone to his wife and discussing poor performance shown by all women he screened during the day. In the novel, Vanda is presented as dominating and women with sinful intentions. In the movie also the character of Vanda is cruel. Sadomasochism is shown in the novel when Severin, after being humiliated by Alexis, said to her that woman is man’s enemy.
Differences
Since the novel was written by an Austrian novelist more than a century ago, it is confined to a limited class. The time related differences are also clearly visible between novel and the movie. The society and class that are portrayed in the novel, indicate towards a limited society. The film, on the other hand, appears describing the issues in wider perspectives. New issues and horizons of feminism are catered in front of audiences in a new manner. Though feminism is the main theme of the film and novel, the gap of time between both the works is clearly visible.
