How the story “A Day's Wait” would have been very different if it had been told by Schatz or by the doctor
A story is usually from the perspective of the narrator, who in this story is the father. The story thus depicts and elaborates upon the subjective reality of the narrator. It is an expression of his/ her own thoughts, feelings, and actions, and even when there is a discussion of someone else’s emotions, it is from the narrator’s vantage point of view.
If this story had been told by Schatz or the doctor, there would have been a significant difference between those narrations. For example, if Schatz would have told the story then there would have a detailed discussion of his emotions and fears, that he felt every minute because of this understanding that since it is difficult to live in forty-four degrees, therefore, the chances for his survival at a hundred and two degrees were bleak. Further, it would have been a detailed account of what he would have said to whom; where he would have wished to go or be; and many more. It would have been an interesting, and quite probably lonely, internal lived life of a nine year old boy who believed that he would die in a day’s time; one who feared that others would also catch his disease and die because it is an epidemic.
However, if the same story would have been told by the child’s doctor, then it would have had a usual matter of fact account of his visits to many people suffering from influenza, which was a light epidemic those days, along with many other patients with different ailments and diseases. Further, in such a story the doctor may have elaborated the various ways in which he tries to calm the parents and other family members of the patient. It may have contained the various precautions and methods to take care of oneself and others during such an epidemic.
