History plays a major role in the growth of a community. It can make it either better or worse depending on how people take up the lessons learnt. A positive effect would be ideal in the overall progress of a community since it will guarantee fairness while negative effects might lead to more collisions with the affected parties. Slavery exhibits both positive and negative effects to the community. Slavery is the imprisonment of an inferior race or community with the aim of making them workers. The slavery trade brought different reactions and impacts to the society that still affects the way people interact in the modern world.
Slavery began in America in 1619 when the first ship full of African slaves docked in Jamestown, Virginia (Staff, 2009). The farmers and businessmen needed slaves to work on their lucrative cash crop farms, such as tobacco. The trade continued to grow in the coming centuries while spreading to other regions and colonies in the United States. With its expansion to America’s westward came a movement to bring down the trade in the mid-19th century (Staff, 2009). The American Civil War that happened between 1861 and 1865 led to the freeing of 4 million slaves. The following years saw a change in the trade with more African-American activists taking to the streets to campaign for the release of other slaves.
The historical slave trade, currently affects the relationship between the whites and blacks in America. The trade led to the respect from both communities regarding what they can fulfill. Throughout the centuries, the black race grew in skills and mindset, increasing their status in the community. The relationship between the two races led to the constant growth of America as they both work together to improve the nation. However, the trade brought about enmity among a few people in both races. Some white Americans do not like the idea of collaborating with the black race. There are illegal societies whose aim is to spread hate speech among the white community about the blacks. However, the two sides have to be present in any society for it to work together towards a common purpose. In conclusion, slavery was an important event in the American history and current times.
