Public goods such as public education, vote and public libraries are free and it is good for the society as it places every person in the society on an equal pedestal called social equality. Social equality is good for the society as it guarantees people the same rights and benefits, and the background of people does not matter. This means that the caste, creed, religion, class, race, or religion has no role to play in deciding the distribution of public goods as everyone in the society is guaranteed pubic goods as their basic right. This scenario creates a situation of universal equality that helps in developing a society where everyone lives in a safe and stable environment as they are ensured that they can access certain services for free. This means society as a whole is more powerful that one individual and the government provide everyone the same service. Another advantage of having public goods is that even the poorest section of the society is guaranteed some basic products and services and these services cannot be bought by the richest section or an individual in the society. These services cannot be withheld from people do not have the financial resources to pay for them.
Services such as food, housing and transportation are not seen as public goods as these services are chosen by individuals and can be seen as luxury goods. The choice of transportation, food and housing is based on personal choice and government cannot afford to pay for these services for every individual in the society. There will always be a section of society who can afford better housing, costlier food, and most expensive mode of transportation. It would make no sense to make people pay for public goods as some sections of the society would not be able to afford these services. Also, public goods are developed and paid for by the government as they want to make sure basic services are made available to every individual in the society. Also, the government wants to guarantee social equality among everyone in the society. People already pay for public goods through taxes to government, and government uses tax revenue to provide public goods to everyone in the society. The main goal of providing public goods is to ensure that basic services are made available for everyone and by making people pay for them would rectify its original purpose.
