The Washington Fellowship will invest valuable causes into young African leaders who are forming the continent’s future. This will enable them to strengthen their partnership and association between the United States and Africa. This will also build a group of young dynamic leaders who are at the edge of change and innovation in their respective sectors. The participants will be the ones who have a proven track record of management in a public, private, or civic group. As I hope to serve my community through Millennial Informatics, I do have a strong bent of mind and demonstrate a strong and vibrant dedication towards contributing my skills and talents to build and serve my community.
I feel assured that by being a fellow at the young leaders would tap out my hidden potential and my contribution will benefit the growth and welfare of the society. The Washington Fellowship is an internship program initiated by the President Obama and is named the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). This internship program is for the benefit of Africa where 500 young leaders will be brought to the United States every year, commencing in 2014, for training on leadership skills, academic coursework, mentoring, and will create special opportunities in Africa to apply the acquired knowledge into practical use. This will enhance economic growth, prosperity and bond democratic institutions. The young leaders attending this program will spend six weeks at top American universities and colleges where they will be provided programs in business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership, public management. This will enable them to start new businesses, run it and serve their society. I take pride that by attending the internship to make the best use of the above mentioned benefits in the right way and apply it in our industry where patients will be benefitted with the advanced use of our technologies.
The Washington Fellows will be trained in public management and administration, business and civic leadership. My formal training at the university which will comprise of workshops, mentoring, networking openings with leaders in each field and internships across the United States will mould my creative skills and explore new opportunities. This internship that the U.S is investing on the young leaders marks just the beginning of a long term investment. I hope to be supported in the aspect that my acquired skills will be put to proper use by U.S Government working with businesses, governments, institutions in Africa thus creating meaningful opportunities to demonstrate my skills.
The opportunities provided at the internship will enable me to enrich my education with high-impact experiences and allow me to apply classroom training in professional settings. I hope it will polish my job skills and professional capabilities. I hope my interaction with professionals from various sectors will motivate me in developing new skills, expanding my achievements and help in achieving my goal. I believe this internship will help me in exploring a wide variety of opportunities and launch me into my future career.
United States has held fifteen exchanges particularly for young African leaders and sponsored 1,283 sub-Saharan scholars through YALI. The participants have grasped this opportunity that was available and has started youth-driven organizations and networks. They apply their in knowledge in advising governments and help in establishing new and vibrant businesses. Thus they showcase their extraordinary talent and hope of the young leaders already in the active work of transforming their country and communities.
I hope to seize the opportunity and avail the excellent training and hands-on experience exposes that can benefit and mould my academic discipline. The exposure will equip me to work practically and approach health IT project implementation and management. This internship program would be a perfect tool to get myself ready for serving my community in Africa. I hope it would help solidify my career and help me be part of a network with possible future guidance from leading professionals. I think there can be no better way to enhance my skills and abilities than participating in this internship program.
More than ever, at every stage of the internship program I would experience an opportunity to learn new skills and insights about myself as well as the real world. I hope to achieve the challenge of speaking up and grow out of a stagnant period and become more confident, talkative when necessary, and personable. I can be happier by acquiring a new skill of interacting freely with people without feeling any introverted pressure, or fears of letting me get the best of me. I can use this new courage and attitude to make new friends, live life, and be more amiable and inviting instead of quiet and forgettable.
As a whole, I believe this internship will teach me what I wanted and much more. I want to do things that I know no one else has had the opportunity to do, and if they did, it was not to the extent that I would be able to experience it. An important thing that I would learn is to get out of my own way in order to be the most I could be and become a person that other people would be drawn to and feel comfortable with. With this internship, I have the assurance that my career path would be solidified and I will need this trait to be the best I can be and to make connections with people to resolve conflicts or attain information.
My hands-on experience would make me more marketable and I would be able to handle more responsibilities within a limited time. As an intern, I would be surrounded by professionals in the industry that I am seeking access to. It’s beyond the fact of just getting a grade, earning credit, or making money. This will be an excellent opportunity to learn from everyone around me, ask questions, and impress them with my eagerness. These people can be your future guides or can be the connection to my future profession. I would be able to learn my strengths and weaknesses by creating learning objectives and receiving feedback from my supervisor. This is a special learning opportunity that I may never have again as a working adult. I would be able to avoid my mistakes that I am prone to make in the future and learn many things that I won’t know. I would get the chance of observing and take risks. As the saying goes like this “Practice makes perfect”, after learning about a specific technique in the classroom, I will be able to test it out in the world of work. This will help me be more equipped with the technique.
The main benefits of this internship would enable me to apply classroom theory to actual work situations. It would also enable me to develop my long-range career plan and provide a basis to select an elective course which will integrate my academics and career goals. I hope this internship will help me to attain the overall maturity by strengthening resourcefulness and problem-solving skills. It would also give me self-confidence and sense of responsibility towards my society.
YALI Internship helps me to attain an experience of applying knowledge to real “world” and learn to back up my smarts with action. The privilege of working with professionals will help me gain entry into a network that offers me new ideas of expanding the horizons of my current business. I would be altogether motivated, ambitious and get into a full fledged work of serving my community with all the acquired knowledge.
I hope to acquire the needed skills to hire potential quality employees in my organization and enhance their image. This internship would certainly play an important role and be an integral part in the upliftment of my organization that is committed to serve mankind. Not only that, the impact would be so great that its purpose will be in unison with my organizations philosophy and practice and will benefit its productivity in terms of dedication, commitment and sincere work towards my community.
The Washington Fellowship plays a great role in accessing various opportunities like establishing partnerships with different companies, government ministries, research institutions, regional organizations. It also offers relationship with non-profit and community based organizations all over the area to give best career opportunities. For instance, Microsoft will provide Washington fellows with internships in their offices located in Africa. The Ethiopian Airlines offers training at their business management and corporate offices. These participants will have options to support their ideas, businesses and organizations.
I would be greatly encouraged to be supported by programs and trainings that would mould me and make me an individual which my nation seeks for in the area of serving mankind by my abilities and skills. This will surely create a positive impact on my society where humanity will be benefitted in an incredible way. The extent of impact will be much greater than the investment that YALI would be providing me. I work to support a noble cause that would be helping the downtrodden in the society. All the benefits, training given to me will be an investment for the society and for the well being of the nation. My main aim and cause will be to do good to my community through my skills, talents and investment that the YALI has invested in me. I am sure that this would be reforming the nation as I would encourage others in the society and motivate them to serve the deserving and let the oppressed go free. All these are not possible without any support or guidance in my career. Mere academics alone cannot perform these tasks without any investment. I finally understand the motto of YALI and join the fellowship to support the cause for which it was organized. This will be a turning point in my life and will change the lives and impact many which in turn will contribute to the welfare of the nation.
More than $5 million divided into small grants will be provided to Washington Fellows by the U.S African Development Foundation to start their own business in their respective sectors. The U.S Department of State will be investing $5 million over the period of the internship to benefit alumni establish or grow non-governmental organizations to undertake a project for the benefit of their community. This will facilitate to work in building the network of young leaders, exploring the underserved areas. The USAID will lend hand in establishing regional groups and coordinators to associate Washington Fellows to these chances and support it with $200 million for the programs towards the upliftment of the continent. Let’s join together to face the fight, throw the evil out of sight and paint our nation with a happy face.
