The concepts that are critical in training students with special needs are clearly introduced and described in chapters 4, 13 and 14. These chapters are therefore, essential in empowering a teacher with skills of differentiating and managing a classroom setting. Chapters 4, 13 and 14 also present some of the critical factors that support good teaching practices. After evaluating these chapters, I have realized that a teacher ought to be creative in planning and in reacting to emerging situations. The chapters have also provided various theories that a teacher may apply in order to adopt good teaching practices. For instance, the chapters highlight that behavioural management theories are essential in facilitating creativity among teachers.
Furthermore, teachers need to be preventative instead of being reactionary in order to facilitate good teaching practices. The chapters have described the importance of being preventative in class activities. Despite planning class activities effectively, teachers should also have the ability of responding to students’ immediate needs. Particularly, teachers should be less aggressive when respond to students’ behaviours by trying to contain their anger (Smith, Polloway, Patton & Dowdy, 2008).
The chapters 4, 13 and 14 have also helped me understand the importance of effective planning. Planning for behaviour management is essential in enforcing positive behaviours among students. Moreover, teachers have the responsibility of planning for unusual situations. Teachers should be aware of the systems that can solve a particular problem in order to enforce good teaching practices. Through evaluating these chapters, I have identified that being aware of systems will significantly decrease cases of bad behaviours in classroom settings. Finally, teachers should establish the appropriate time of practicing classroom theories. Moreover, teachers should be willing to deal with unusual situations.
