SELF EVALUATION
A good teacher is the one who conducts self evaluation on themselves. When doing this, they should consider all the major components of the lesson. Obviously, this should come at the end of the lesson. At this stage, it is only reflection that is done. The major questions asked, therefore, include the following:
i) Did I teach well?
ii) Did I not teach well?
iii) If I did not teach well, what was the problem?
iv) If I am to re-teach this lesson, will I do the way I did?
Actually, it is these questions that will determine the success of the lesson. If the answer is ,NO, then the teacher needs to reflex further and find on the better ways of improving appropriately. Hence, he will look at the methodologies applied in the lesson: objectives; time use; media resources used; teaching strategies amongst others(Tileston, D. and E. Walker., 2003).
On the other hand, if the teacher’s answer to this question is YES, then he should have in mind that the lesson was well taught and the objectives well set. They must have been achievable. It then becomes a responsibility of the teacher to keep it up and may be look for ways through which the lesson can be made better. This will build him to be a good teacher(Tileston, D. and E. Walker., 2003). It is through self evaluation that the tutor will ascertain if the process was well done.
Ideally, a good teacher is the one who not only evaluates himself, but does it honestly. More importantly, when doing this, the teacher should not only concentrate on himself, but also focus on other aspects of the lesson including the learner response. Actually, these are equally important aspects through which a proper evaluation will be done. This is what is recommended by the SIOP for the teaching of lessons like this. Ideally, SIOP recommends that a well prepared teacher is dedicated and teaches well.
2. ADVANTAGES OF SIOP LESSON PLAN
The acronym SIOP denotes International Society of Pediatric Oncology originally known in French as Société Internationale d’Oncologie Pédiatrique. It is an association of pediatrics oncologists. Some of the advantages of SIOP lesson plans include:
i) It puts a lot of emphasis on the learner. This makes such lessons be learner centered hence putting the learners in a better position to acquire knowledge.
ii) It lobbies for the incorporation of expository and heuristic pedagogic strategies. This makes the class so accommodative to all the learners.
iii) The creation of spaces for writing lesson objectives, learner activities, lesson period makes the tutor more accountable on whatever they do (Tileston, D. and E. Walker., 2003).
iv) It advocates for the evaluation process at the end of the lesson. Actually, SIOP asserts that the teaching and learning process ends with evaluation. This is a milestone to all the parties involved.
v) This lesson plan also allows for the provision for a variety of media resources. For instance, the use of field studies is paramount in the study of many lessons like this one. It helps to make learning more dynamic. Hence, it becomes more interesting because it helps to translate the monotonous class work into real life experience. This helps to break boredom.
