The American Organization of Nurse Executives, a branch of the American Hospital Association, traces its origin back to 1967. The organization, otherwise known as AONE, is a professional nursing entity for advanced nursing practitioners (ANPs). Based on its website, AONE places emphasis on health care enhancement through expert leadership and innovativeness. The organization has the vision to promote global nursing leadership across all markets (AONE, 2016).
For ANPs, AONE provides education, leadership, research advocacy, and professional development skills as needed in practice. Particularly, ANPs view AONE as a resource for educational programs meant for clinical leaders, executives, and managers. The association offers a range of courses such as CENP, finance, leadership competencies, and governance. Second, ANPs benefit from the shared support on professional and educational development. The organization achieves such objectives by providing actions and visions required for nursing leaders to attain the societal health care needs (AONE, 2016).
Third, AONE targets advocacy as one of the primary responsibilities of ANPs. The main objective is to ensure that their participation remains active in policy issues as identified in nursing practice and patient care. The AONE observes that nursing leadership has an active role to play in emerging healthcare issues such as HIV/AIDS management and education on Zika virus. Therefore, through the association, they will find it easy to access regulatory and legislative platforms for the eventual promotion of quality patient care services (AONE, 2016).
Finally, AONE provides two basic kinds of certification to nursing leaders in nursing management and leadership (CNML) and executive nursing practice (CENP). The organization offers CNML in collaboration with AACN. The certification targets leaders in an active management role. Eligible candidates must be active RNs as, at least, BSNs with a minimum of two years’ worth of experience in a management position. Contrarily, CENP focuses on nurse leaders who remain active in executive nursing positions. For eligibility, ANPs should be active RNs and possess an MSN or higher qualification plus a minimum of two years’ experience as active executive nurses (AONE, 2016a).
