Italy is a historical visual art hub. This history has been largely approached from a classic, "Renaissance" perspective. In contrast, modern art history has witnessed dramatic changes in paradigm and focus. Being a course offering focused on modernist schools and approaches to Italian visual art history, The "Italy in International Modernism: Modernism – 1909 to the Present" is, if anything, a unique, immersive learning experience. The practicum component (i.e. Field Trips) is, moreover, an unparalleled experience which art students cannot find anywhere else (or, for that matter, by any other seasoned art history instructors) but in Europe's seat of art history, Italy. In opting for "Italy in International Modernism: Modernism – 1909 to the Present", I, accordingly, subscribe to a learning experience hardly replicable. The choice is justified by credentials and particular reasons. This statement aims, hence, to highlight grounds I find qualifying for a place in prestigious "Italy in International Modernism: Modernism".
Being a senior student of Visual Studies and Architectural Studies, I have accumulated considerable conceptual understanding of visual art history. Specifically, by studying major schools and styles of visual art and architectural history in Europe, including Italy, I have gained a rich academic learning experience. This experience has been, moreover, polished by field visits to local art museums and exhibitions. However, art museums and exhibitions – as I have come to experience – remain to be inspired by Great Italian Masters. If anything, "contemporary", let alone "modern", art is exhibited and, for that matter, analyzed as avant-garde, innovative but not as equally masterful as classic works. The lack of a "modern" perspective to Italy's art history has sparked an intensive research for an immersive learning experience addressing a personal and professional need for more practical understanding of modern Italian art history. Field experience in Rome, Venice, and Tuscany (all home of great, modern art contributions) has become increasingly a necessity and hence "Italy in International Modernism: Modernism".
