Technology is rather the greatest invention of the last two centuries, affecting the old and new generations in unprecedented ways. Technology can be a positive or negative tool, depending on who is using it. In many developed nations, it is the fundamental driving force of the economy and transforms many lives in society by shaping the future in a unique fashion never anticipated before. Technology has been extremely pivotal in taking charge of humankind’s bold steps towards unlocking the future. With the invention of the computer, technology was able to revolutionize the way people communicate, socialize, and spend their time on the internet. Many jobs have since been created, including web design, web development, networking, and hardware and software maintenance, just to mention a few. Technology continues to influence many other individuals to invent and create amazing concepts that pave the way to an exciting yet fearful future. The reason why the future with technology is both exciting and fearful is that there is potential for the creation of genius ideas, for example, in biotechnology, robotics, and engineering. Many technology prospects are currently devolving to artificial intelligence machines, robotics, and bio-medics used to invent new cures, drugs, and other sophisticated biotechnology inventions. At the same time, many people fear that the technology could become unrestricted and give birth to the creation of robots, biohazards, and bioweapons, increase the number of unethical hackers, and maybe propagate world conflict.
Through technology, we have been able to mechanize agriculture and grow vast amounts of food in short periods and with less input. By using technology, many countries have been able to genetically modify foods that grow fast and are resistant to pests and diseases. Fertilizers manufactured in the laboratory through research and biotechnology have been rolled out to farmers throughout the world to enhance productivity and healthy yields. Additionally, technology has enhanced the development of drought-resistant seeds that can be grown to rehabilitate dry areas and generate more revenue for farmers as well as the government.
Technology has greatly improved transport and enhanced the mobility of people and goods from one place to another. Transportation includes airplanes, vehicles, motorcycles, roads, energy, materials, and information. Using technology, people have been able to build sophisticated vehicles, trains, ships, and other transport means. Road transport has been advancing more, especially with the invention of hybrid and electric cars that have zero carbon emissions. On the other hand, we have electric trains that travel at approximately 300 miles an hour and enable people to travel distances that would have otherwise taken much time.
Technology has revolutionized the way we communicate by integrating the computer and the internet, together with other electronic gadgets to enable us to relay information much faster. Nowadays, getting in touch with a person who is miles away can be done just by texting the person or calling them at affordable rates. We have social media, which has turned into a frenzy, especially for the young generation. Through the social media, everyone can connect to each other and obtain as many friends as seemingly possible. It has become easier to air opinions and views for the world to listen to, read, or watch by using websites and blogging. The internet also has numerous news channels that make it easier to follow news proceedings and keep up with information about what is happening throughout the world. All these aforementioned things can be achieved from the comfort of one’s home and without using any printed media (Member).
Education and the learning process have become much easier to create a new generation of bright and technology savvy students who understand the complexities of technology and are willing to share their intellect to the world. Many schools have changed their conventional curriculum to fit in with the technology era by adopting iPads, mobile phones, computers, projectors, and smart boards. These technological devices boost learning for students and have made it easier for them to master subjects like geography, physics, mathematics, and economics that would have been otherwise challenging using conventional learning tools. Programs such as long distance learning have opened up international schools, many different people who can apply and get an education without having to go the school itself. This can be achieved through technologies such as videoconferencing and skyping using web cameras.
The higher the demand for technology, the more the depletion of natural resources utilized in building these technologies. We have put immense pressure on the earth’s surface in an attempt to satisfy the demands for computers and phones. At one time, we risk depleting resources such as aluminum, titanium, or gold. Fertilizers manufactured in highly advanced laboratories cause immense harm to the soil and wear out its nutrients; thus, rendering it toxic and unusable after some time. These chemicals also endanger human lives and could lead to diseases such as cancer (Ramey).
There is too much pollution in the world, and consequently, the effects of climate change continue to be felt as many parts of the world. Greenhouse gasses pollution has been caused by manufacturing and processing factories which produce all sorts of technological gadgets that are needed by the population. While they work to satisfy this demand for quality and better products, these manufacturers release harmful chemicals that pollute the environment and cause global climate change. Many issues regarding climate change have risen in the past, and the best option for most of the industries is to utilize green technology.
In conclusion, has numerous impacts on society and without a doubt, we can experience its effect on our daily lives. It has affected the growth of the economy, our culture and living standards, and our social lives. Our lives have been filled with so much technology that we envision it as part of us. We have become more productive, knowledgeable, and efficient in our lives because of technology. As a matter of fact, technology had transformed the world into a global village and helped people to overcome global boundaries of culture, race, and other continental barriers.
