After reading the play, The Glass Menagerie, we get to understand who Tom Wingfield is. He is a really creative and talented person who is captured in a cruel and materialistic world. Living with everyday contradictions, he has to curb his wings by working at the shoe warehouse. He definitely hates that job, such work is a burden to him. To escape from it, he tries to write, he spends evenings in cinemas, plunging into the world of dreams, dreams of becoming a sailor.
There several moments that a worthy of our attention. To protect himself, Tom brings home some book. Later on Amanda starts to confiscate the books that he has brought. It was unbearable for him; Tom just could not appease himself. He understands that if Amanda cannot estimate how precious these books were to him, if she cannot comprehend such masterpieces, then she will never realize his pursuits and dreams.
Once Tom even tried to make it clear to his mom that he differs from her. He says that he is not a reflection of her ideas; his aims in life are not the same as her. Tom Wingfield tries to explain her that his job at the shoe warehouse is a Herculean task. However, his mom rejects everything he says. Even though she enforcing him to a heavy sacrifice, Amanda tries to convince him not to worry, that he is on the right track with his place of work. But she does it not for herself, but for Laura, for the weakest of her children. She might be is well aware that his son takes on full responsibility for their family. Nevertheless, all this disagreements make the gap between them wider.
The last straw for Tom was unsuccessful evening, Amanda asked Tom to invite someone, who could be a good fiancé for Laura. Tom Wingfield brought his the only friend from the place he works, his name is Jim O`Connor. However, nothing went as planned and soon after Jim rushes out of the doors saying he has to pick his fiancée.
It was not fault of Tom at all, but Amanda brings down reproaches and clams on Tom. She shouts at him for inviting a guest that has bride. Moreover, Amanda is annoyed with the fact that despite the invitation, Jim still had plans for that evening.
All these events lead to clarifying the dilemma of Tom’s life, where he has to choose between self-sacrifice and freedom. On one hand, it is impossible for him to leave, because Laura and Amanda will simply disappear without his pitiable earnings. On the other, by keeping everything in places he has to forget about happiness and all his dreams like traveling all over the world or writing poems. A compromise may be only with his own conscience.
After the argument with his mom, Tom decides to leave the home and follow dad's footsteps. However, no matter where Tom Wingfield goes, the same image appears in his mind, image of his tender and helpless sister while lightning candles.
