Miss Magazine and Cosmopolitan are two women's magazines that speak about some of the issues that affect women in their daily lives. Miss Magazine is primarily a feminist magazine whereas Cosmopolitan is a magazine that speaks about relationships, losing weight and gives women advice on dating and fashion.
The spring edition of Miss Magazine speaks about the legal issues that face some women in prison (Iyer1). The article by Deepa Iyer and Gaylynn Burroughs argues that the feticide Indiana law may prove dangerous for women especially those who are colored, immigrant and of low income. They might, therefore, find themselves prosecuted (Iyer 1). Ms. Magazine also proves helpful in looking for jobs for women by advertising jobs on the column. The magazine also mentions issues to do with race most importantly black women (Iyer 1). Ms. Magazine discusses the contemporary issues that face women and finds tips on helping them. It mainly depicts women of color as vulnerable and gives evidence from the law. It portrays women as being as equally intelligent as men.
Cosmopolitan magazine is a magazine that offers advice on what or what not to wear. It also gives suggestions on the latest fashion. Dating and sex are issues which are discussed widely (Hussey 1). Women are advised on how to make their men happy, the challenges that can come about during a relationship and how to tackle them. Cosmopolitan magazine depicts an image of women who are not intelligent and whose sole purpose in life is to make men happy by their weight, dressing and relationship advice (HusseyE 2).
The advertisements in this magazine are primarily entertainment. Both magazines relate to legal, economic and social issues. Ms. Magazine portrays that there are some strong-minded, intelligent women while Cosmopolitan portrays women as lovers of fashion, dating and sex.
