In the past, people respected their religion and did everything good to show respect and belief in their religion. When we take a case of Christianity for example, they respected each other according to the word of God that taught on loving their neighbor with the same love they have for themselves. Most importantly, many individuals particularly Americans believe that morality is not possible without the belief in God (Pew research Center, 2007). In the past, people had a strong love for their neighbors and helped them in every situation they could, to show their obedience to God’s teachings.
Similarly, religious leaders as well as political leaders served with morality to express their religious beliefs to the people they served, especially on servant leadership as expressed by Jesus Christ (Spears, 2004). Political leaders for instanced served their nations with equality, and there was no corruption because they distinguished what was morally correct and what was not, and they wanted to lead by examples and express qualities of a good leadership. They led by examples, following closely the leadership of Jesus as a way of showing the impact religion had on their morality. On the other hand, religious leaders did the same by serving their followers in ways that their gods would be pleased, as a way of protecting their religions.
With time, things changed and people started viewing religion and morality as two different things that were not even closely related. The love that people had for their neighbors is no more. Today, people kill other people, those that are closely related, and even their relatives just because of their own selfish gains. They do all that regardless of whether they are Christians, Hindus, Islam, or even other religions. They do immoral things without caring what their religion depict them of doing, meaning that they no longer respect their religions when doing immoral things.
Besides, religious leaders as well as political leaders have diverted from their moral ways that expressed their belief in their religions. Political leaders are corrupt and other even snatches properties from innocent citizens without care. Others fight for powers resulting in the killings of many innocent people. Religious leaders have also diverted their moral values and preach the gospel, not because they have the calling but because they want to get money from their believers. Again, the worship of other gods as well as devil worshipping is prominent today. People from all religions engage in worshipping other gods, forgetting the morals that guide them, all in search of fame and finances. In the past, every girl who wished to have a decent marriage had to be a virgin and it had to be confirmed on the wedding day. Today, sexuality has been abused and there are many cases of teens pregnancy across the world, as people engage in sexual relationship without considering their morality as well as what their religion teaches about premarital sexual behaviors (Gordon & Schroeder, 2008).
