The role of the hero in any piece of literature is interesting as it draws the readers into the plot of the story. Like many heroes, Gilgamesh shows how he survives the difficult journey. Gilgamesh makes an interesting journey as a selfish and needy king who changes throughout is journey but maintains his position as the brave hero. The readers expect the hero to be someone that they can relate to easily and should learn how to deal with their flaws.

While heroes have a number of flaws and go through a number of challenges daily, the hero, Gilgamesh reveals that he is able to fit into the typical ideals of a hero and endure the departure, initiation and return of a hero’s journey.

There are various challenges that Gilgamesh must face and conquer on his journey including the defeat of the Bull of Heaven and Humbaba, and crossing the Sea of Death
The hero journey changes the negative qualities in Gilgamesh as he becomes a better person after he returns from his journey. He cries for the first time after his friend dies which shows that he has changed from the unfeeling tyrant to a person who has emotions.
The hero learns valuable lessons from his journey as he learns that as a leader he must appreciate the lives and feelings of those he serves.
