While reading The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros I had a thought that I can not only understand the main heroine, her feelings and thoughts but I also can relate to her. In this book I found two chapters that not only speak to me, but it seems that they are taken from my life. In a chapter called Chanclas I found an incredible resemblance to my own life. The same as Esperanza I did not have fancy clothes and shoes due to the financial position of my family. I lived with my auntie Stacey and our expenses were limited and strict. The same as Esperanza`s mother, my auntie would buy me shoes that are practical and what is more important cheap. She was buying shoes from Payless. The same way as Esperanza, I would try to hide my shoes with my pants because I was afraid that kids would laugh at me. The interesting thing is that this footwear is supposed to be worn by people, but instead these shoes were wearing me out.
The other chapter that relates to me is called The First Job. Again Esperanza reminds me because I started working early since I had to take care not only about myself but also my children. I became mother in 16 and desperately needed money. I was lucky to meet a man who offered me a job in his office thus I became manager. I was not only in charge, but also I was making good money until one day when that man asked me ‘to help’ him. He forced me to have sex with him and like Esperanza I got two in one – job and horrible experience.
