Part 1 Week 4
Work team indicates a group of people that are working together, and are doing joint efforts for increasing the output but without increasing the output (Wagner & Hollenback, 2009). The work teams are effectual when there are frequent changes in the job contents and the employees have limited skills that do not allow then to effectively perform their duties. Work teams help in the creation of the positive synergy via promoting coordination and efforts of all the employees (Robbins, De Cenzo, Coulter & Woods, 2013).
There are various strategies available to Riordan Manufacturing Virtual Organization for building teams. The first strategy is to select the team members or hire the workers from the external source in order to ensure an effective and balanced team. Another strategy is the determination of the type of work the team performs tin order to effectively produce the CardiCare Valve heart valves, which is a new product for the company i.e., Riordan Manufacturing Virtual Organization. The input is, however, from several departments during the implementation and planning phases for ensuring smooth functioning from the phase of order placement to the delivery phase in the production cycle. So, the cross functional teams are a good and effectual choice in this regard. In the cross functional teams, different employees are hired from different departments so that they can work together in order to complete the assigned task (Kurtz & Boone, 2008). Employees from different departments use different and innovative ideas paving the way to the effective accomplishment of the project. Moreover, expectations of goals also present an effective strategy for the formation of team for Riordan Manufacturing. Every team member should be aware of his/her goals in order perform the task properly.
The potential challenges and barriers that may happen in Riordan Manufacturing include every individual in the team may come with his own ideas, beliefs, experience, and opinions because of which conflict may occur within the teams. In the self-managed teams there is no managerial supervision and every individual is at the same level. In the case of conflict within a team there is no manager and authority to control the conflicts, which may paves the way to the power struggles. When there are power struggles in the organization the focus shift towards the conflict instead of the completion of tasks. The conflicts pave the way to the creation of dissatisfaction and most of the employees may quit leading to decrease in the productivity.
In order to determine the best strategy the interests and opinion of all the team members will be considered. This can be explained in a way that in the case of conflict of interest and conflict of opinion within a team, all the members can put their ideas on the table in order to find the best idea for solving the problem and completing the task. Further, an effective strategy can be determined in all the individuals do work in collaboration and cooperation with each other. They have to compromise in order to effectively complete the task.
The measures that will be used to determine successful operation of the company include team surveys and the reports provided by the team members on the monthly and weekly basis to analyze the performance of the team and address the conflicts that arise within a team. Establishment of evaluation layers will help to measure the success of the team. Clear goals and the expectations from every member of the team should be described explicitly in a meeting so that every individual within a team know their duties and what is expected from them. The members of management, team, and the executives should collaborate with one another in order to establish effective goals. The collaboration help in the formation of SMART i.e., Smart, Measureable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Bound goal process, which can help in the checking the progress till the completion of the progress. However, the milestones for the progress measurement include:
- Team meeting once in a week with the management of the team in order to discuss the progress in accordance with the SMART goal
- Individual evaluations on monthly basis for illustrating the contribution of every member in the achievement of the team’s goal
- Team meeting that are arranged quarterly with the executives of the team in order to discuss the financial goals, evaluate the progress of the task or project, and make modifications in the strategies when required
- On the completion of the project the success and the relevant information should be shared with the team members as well as with the shareholders
Moreover, the in order to ensure the smooth functioning, collaborative efforts, coordinative work, and reinforcement of the goals it is essential that effective reward system should be introduced within an organization.
- Provision of reward at an individual level by considering the performance of all the individuals that are working in the team
- Incentives in monetary terms, ensuring a tier-based bonus plan or structure within the organization depending on the timely completion, consideration of the budget, and product quality.
