"Motivation to do anything depends on the belief that it has not yet been done. Everyone who loses something precious, say a diamond ring, will search diligently and even desperately until it is found. But only a fool would continue searching for it after it is found. It is no different with other kinds of searches, such as the search for truth. Once we think we have it, we stop looking.”
Truth is not absolute and there are different ways to look at everything in life. Also life does not end and neither do people get satisfied once they get what they had always wanted. The search for that elusive something continues and if it did not life would become not only boring but also meaningless. This is something I learnt when I came to college. As a kid, I was always told by my parents that I had to get good grades to get into college. Getting good grades, getting into college and later getting a stable job was what deemed the best thing to do by my parents. This was drummed into me from early on. Every time I played for a little longer or spent lot of time in front of the TV or television or every time I neglected to do my homework my parents always told me that I would lose out on my grades and wouldn’t get into college. Soon their belief became my mantra. I started going out less, spent less time playing outside, stopped watching TV altogether and pores over my books so my grades would not fall. I kept getting good grades, good enough to get into college. My parents were happy. I was happy. I started believing that my life was set and I had achieved what I had wanted to. I was happy because I had made my parents happy.
But very soon I realized that I was not happy or content but far from it. There was a nagging feeling that I had left something undone and that I was pretending to be happy and content when I was actually not. I had forced myself to believe what my parents had said as the absolute truth. Life’s stated goal was to get into college and get a stable job and maybe eventually get married. Having set this goal early on I was motivated just to do this and nothing else. Although I was interested in music and sports I did not play an instrument in my free time or took up regular swimming. Somehow getting home to study and doing my homework was the predominant thought in my head. I knew I was better in music than I was in academics. I guess my parents knew too, for they kept insisting that I work harder even though I was doing fairly well in my classes. Having got what I wanted I failed to realize that there was so much out there that I could do and could have done that would have made me happier. Playing the violin had always been a dream and now I do not have the time to learn it or practice it. Maybe I never will as I will start looking for work once I am done with college. I regret not having looked beyond the truth or the version of truth my parents had brought me up with. They were not wrong. This is what they knew, what they wanted and what made them happy. I too stopped looking at other opportunities where I could truly excel. In getting good grades and pleasing my parents I had set a goal and has narrowed down my interests as well as my life.
Some might consider me a fool for having second thoughts about the place I am currently in. I should be happy as I have things that many could only dream about. But I know that I have stopped looking and that I do not search for more. If I do want anything more it is something that is related to the goals that have already been set. I should have continued looking once I had pleased my parents. Maybe after I finish college I would take a break, explore the world or explore and find out what I really want in life. Instead of stopping at what I have already achieved I would like to go on looking for something that would interest me and intrigue me. Just as truth is not absolute, goals are not and should not be constant. Only when there is a search for something more, life is meaningful. A life shaped on and based on the aspirations and reams of other people would be theirs and not yours completely. This is where I am right now. Feeling that I have lived the life my parents wanted to live and not something that I had wanted. To stop looking outside of your life and to stop searching for more is to stop living your life and leading a monotonous existence. Life is too short to be fulfilling other’s dreams and narrowing it down to a single goal or a dream. Life makes sense and there is a spiritual and emotional growth only when there is a constant search. The desire to keep learning, changing and searching is what keeps people alive. One who keeps searching when he has found what he is looking for is not a fool. Rather he is wise for he has realized that searching means growth.
Everyone should have motivation, not to just do what they had set out to do in the first place but to constantly challenge themselves and do things that they would have dreamt of before. There are no absolutes in life and change is the only constant. Our life should not be stunted because we have a narrow belief of what the truth is or what happiness is. There are always different ways of looking at things and one must always strive to look at things from different perspectives. Be it truth or a goal, a person must not stop once he or she decides that it has been found or achieved. They must keep going for the search means that one still has the capacity to change and grow.
