The documentary movie “The Thin Blue Line” showcases the wrongful prosecution of Randall Dale Adams in the murder of a police officer in 1976. Adams was wrongfully blamed by the then sixteen year old David Harris who had actually committed the crime. Adams spent twelve years in penitentiary and was given a death sentence for a crime he never committed. His sentence was later on commuted to life in prison. It was after the release of the documentary film that helped bring the truth to light, that Adams was finally released from prison and his case was dismissed.
In 1976, Texas law did not have severe punishments for juveniles and it is believed to have been the reason behind relieving the sixteen year old David Harris of all the charges and putting the blame on the twenty eight year old Randall Adams. The justice system was keen on awarding the most severe punishment to someone and Adams was the most convenient choice at that time. Three witnesses were even awarded money to commit perjury in court in order to collect evidence against Adams for his execution. Adams was not even given a reparation amount which was mandatory to be given to prisoners who were wrongfully convicted, as his case was dismissed instead of being pardoned.
The case is a brutal example of how injustice can destroy a human’s life. Adams was just a convenient scapegoat who was unfortunate enough to fall prey to the flawed justice system. He did not have any witnesses or evidence to defend his innocence other than to keep stating it. The only factor which led him to be wrongfully convicted of murder charges was just his age. Had he been 10 years younger he would have walked as a free man in 1976.
