Jack Wilton and I were serving at the King of Henry VIII of England when our adventure began. It was during the colonial rule and the army had to represent its King at all battles possible. We had the courage and zeal to defend our country from external aggressors no matter what. When our troops encamped near Turwin of France, Jack pretended that he had overheard rumors that the King had plans to reduce the number of sutler, the civilian provisioner. In a particular battle, the king and his council had to agree on a number of issues; one being the number of soldiers and sutler at the war. Jack lied to the sutler that he had to give away all his suppliers to the soldiers then throw himself to the mercy of the king. Sutler was completely fooled and convinced and so he did what he was told. He gave away all his suppliers to the soldiers then submitted himself to the king so that the king would have complete control over him. The king was completely shocked at how the prank worked. Shortly after Jack’s escapades, he ends up befriending a captain who forces him to enrich him by throwing a dice. Rich people were respected and held with a high esteem. Jack and I were not much concerned with riches because we served at the King’s army. Not that we were not human to like riches, in fact, I do, it is just that we were much concerned with carrying guns and ammunitions to protect the kingdom
Jack is tired by his subservience to the captain and he advises him that the only way of rising the ranks of the army is to become a spy and dig out for information that would become valuable to the king. To do so, he has to bring useful and classified intelligence to the king. The captain, driven by the thirst to become rich, ends up entering the French lines as an English spy. The poor ambitious captain is discovered by the French government and he is almost killed. The French has mercy on him and he is hustled back to our camp. When the campaign on the captain was over, we find ourselves back in England again. We cross to the English Channel to search for means of making a livelihood. We reach the French king late enough to join the monarch’s service against the Swiss. We then travel to Munster, Germany where we find John Leiden who was leading the Baptist against the duke of Saxony. Jack and I witness the infamous massacre where the Baptists are annihilated because they refused to carry weapons into the war. They trusted their supernatural powers to come into their rescue when they entered the war but they did not work.
After the end of the war, Jack and I meet the earl of Surrey who was at the continent at the time. Surrey was familiar with Jack when they had met at King Henry’s court and they are happy to have met again. I have not acquainted with Surrey in personal levels. I have only seen him in meetings and battles when he paid a courtesy visit to King Henry. He opens up to Jack and confides his undying love to Geraldine, a beautiful Florentine woman. Surrey then proposes to Jack that we travel together to Italy to search for her. Since we had no other plans in mind, we agreed to the suggestions and accompanied the earl. We proceeded down to Italy. On our way, we exchanged pleasantries and reminded each other of the past battles that we were engaged in. Surrey was always our ally during wars and we had fought many wars with his troops. On our way, Surrey suggests that they exchange their identities with Jack for a period of time. This was to make the nobleman, Surrey, can behave in a less fashioned way. Jack was pleased by the prospect of being an earl for a period of time, so he agrees. On our arrival to Venice, we are received by a courtesan called Tabitha. Tabitha tries to kill the Jack thinking he is the real earl of Surrey by using the real earl as her assistant. Surrey and Jack turn on her and had her executed for attempted murder. At Venice, Surrey is imprisoned for fraud. But he is later released after we swore not to go without him.
After a short stay at Venice, we finally depart for Florence, the city where Geraldine was born. Overcome by poetry, Surrey finds himself speaking a sonnet in honor of the lady he liked. The poem is countered by Nashe who says that it was an imitation of Petrarch. Surrey is then forced into a competition in which he emerges victorious with our help. Surrey is then recalled to England on business issues. When he leaves for Surrey, Jack, Diamante (a woman accused of adultery) and I travel to Rome where we admire its classical ruins. We are forced to pretend that we are foreigners and tourists. We are entangled in a difficult situation where the Rome goons attack us and kidnap Diamante, who turned out to be Jack’s lover. We are forced to stay in Rome for a long of period in order to search for Jack’s woman. He was fond of her and he could not fathom leaving her behind. In our search, we are entrapped by the Zadok the Jew and Zachary, the Papal Physician who want to use us as specimens in their anatomical college research. We are finally freed from the atrocious pair by the trickery of Juliana who was the courtesan of the Pope. We are finally reunited with Diamante. Zachary was lucky to flee while Zadok faces a blend of execution and torture. After his execution, the three of use flee the ‘Sodom of Italy’ back to English, the encampment in France, where our story began. Jack and I were back to England after France, where we were received by King Henry. He openly admitted that the army has not been the same since we left. He vowed to reinstate us into the army but in high ranks.
