“Kevin is a bit slow in the head,” I said, trying hard not to laugh. I was talking to James, Sparky and Ken, three members of our basketball team about Kevin, our point guard. Kevin had cost us the first quarter in a game where we stood the chance of winning $5000 in prize money if we beat two more teams. It was obvious that we needed the money and even more obvious that we were a bunch of jokers. However, the fact that we had reached the semi-finals seemed to have dawned on all the others except me. Their expressions suddenly changed as I realized that Kevin had been standing behind me the whole time. Soon, an argument broke out as he pointed out that I was a “know-it-all” always trying to show that I am better than the rest. This row affected our game and we lost. I had learnt a valuable lesson.
In a situation like ours, teamwork should be the driving force. I learnt that I should not point out the mistakes of other people in a negative manner during a game. This is because team mates should always encourage each other to overcome obstacles together. Teamwork is about the sum of the parts, coming together to add up different qualities. This incident also taught me never to talk about other people behind their back because it is hurtful and wrong. I have since learnt how to apply these lessons in different aspects of life. For example, in group work or in committees, I have learnt to value the input and suggestions made by all the members. This is because everyone has something to bring to the table.
