The movie ‘sound and fury’ is about identity in a deaf culture. It highlights the difficulty of a family living in the fear of losing their culture that has shaped them for generations. The deaf culture is important to the Artinian family, who fear losing it to a cochlear hearing plant that will force them to associate with a different culture in the hearing world. The concept of culture is, therefore, highlighted as an identity through the common behavior of a group of people. Culture is where a group is bound by the practices that identify them the most. It makes people who they are and defines their characteristics through their method of living or way of life. The culture of individuals is the collective values and practices that are shaped through what they associate with themselves. Such reasoning explains the difference in cultures among different people in the society.
The attributes of culture are the beliefs and practices that help to shape the identity in a group of people. In the movie, the deaf people can be identified through their means of communication. Sign language, therefore, is an attribute of culture. Attributes could include forms of language, ceremonial events, religion, the type of food we eat, sports and forms of education. For instance, in the movie, the children used a special means of education and equipment to learn and interact with others. Our culture, therefore, determines how we operate. The methods in which deaf people operate in ‘sound and fury’ form their ways of living, which determines their behavior and attitudes towards different things. The same applies to other people in society who are brought together by common practices exhibited through similar behaviors and values. For example, in our society, honesty and hard work are the values that bring us together. Sometimes, our differences might be noted in class, but we still have a similarity in values and beliefs that make us a wholesome group of people. We share the same sentiments about aspects of love, friendship and family. Religion also forms the center of our lives that makes as identify as one group.
In our class, we have common ground based on systems of education, religious beliefs, marriage and values. We all believe in getting an education that will give us better lives, in which our daily lives are centered. Part of the culture in our society is the process of school, right from elementary to the highest levels of learning. All members in our classroom have adhered to this process. In addition, we believe in religion and the role of a supreme being that exists to watch over us. Even though, we embrace different ways of worship, we all still believe in the existence and presence of some form of higher power. We are raised to believe in aspects of procreation through marriage, which most of us are likely to adhere to. Things such as sports and communal college events also add a form of togetherness with which culture is founded.
Having a culture forms the way we perceive ourselves and those around us. It is the beliefs that we possess that make us form judgments on the basis of our interactions. Furthermore, culture gives us a better understanding of the people around us since we can appreciate the dynamics of it. Culture enables us to understand the differences that we possess and appreciate ourselves for our nature, just like a family in ‘sound and fury’. Cultural diversity is important because it brings together different genres of people with different abilities and helps form a society that is strong and unique. It helps people learn of new things and fosters the continuity in the society. Cultural misunderstandings, on the other hand, are, shaped by the existence of a difference beliefs, vies about religion and lack of a common language which hinders effective communication and understanding.
