Section 1: Describe what you saw
The contemporary dance by the MN was recorded in December 2014 and November 2015 in Slovenia. The dance was performed by eleven dancers who include; Nastja Bremec, Noriko Nishidante, Tomi Cinej, Michael Rynia, Luca Ghedini, Martina Beraldo, Mara Rogelja, Sinisa Bukinac, Emili Bizjak, Tjasa Bucik, and Lia Zuljan. The choreographers for this performance formed part of the dancing crew. They were Nastja Bremec and Michael Rynia, who are the founders of the MN dancing company. The director of this dance was Klavdija Zupan. The music was composed Olafur Arnalds and Diaphane. The music was created and does not have a specific name attached to it. The flow of the music strives to capture the emotions expressed in the dance.
Lighting
The lighting was dim to capture the emotions in the song. The lighting focuses on the performers while the rest of the stage is dark. This enhances the visibility of the performers and enables the audience to concentrate on those performing.
Prop
A prop is the short form of property, which refers to the objects used by performers while on stage. Throughout the dance, the dancers use two similar chairs, and halfway through the dance; they incorporate a square wooden frame into the dance.("MN DANCE COMPANY - Contemporary Dance Performance - ROOM WITH A VIEW")
Costumes
The costumes used in the dance are modern day attires. The females and the makes are dressed in similarly colored costumes. The similarity in costumes enhances uniformity throughout the dance.
Scenery
The scenery on the stage is made to look like a house with two chairs. At the beginning of the dance, one of the performers opens the door into the ‘house', allowing other performers into the ‘room' which is also the stage. The lighting also adds to the scenery, creating a visible distinction between the performers and the rest of the stage.
Section 2: analyze the performance
Is there a story or a narrative or is it abstract
The performance is based on the novel ‘I called him Tie' by Milena Michiko, an Australian writer. The story elaborates on human relationships and the inner and outer life of an individual. The dance aims at showing the different phases of a person’s life ranging from sadness, relationship pieces and shreds of happiness that everyone experiences.
The style/kind of dance it is
The dance is a contemporary dance, which is a fusion of hip-hop and modern dancing moves. The choreographers try to express the different ways that the body can move.
Section 3: give your reactions to the piece
Were the performers in time with the music and with each other?
The performers were in time with each other and with the music. The dance portrays the professionality of the dancers. From their movements, it is evident that a lot of practice and training has been put into the dance to achieve such perfection. Nothing catches the dancers by surprise, a sign that they had rehearsed and practiced over and again.
Did they put sufficient effort into the performance?
Much effort was put into the dance. The dancers organized themselves such that no mistakes were made during the entire performance. The timing was perfected, and the dancers made an appearance on stage when it was their time to do so. Their movements showed that they were a part of the performance and that they were enjoying what they were doing and not just doing it for the sake of it.
Section 4: impressions of performance
Form an opinion of what you have learned on answering section 1,2, 3 and now 4
In your opinion, was the piece successful or not? Why?
The piece was very successful. The success of the piece is evident by the manner in which the choreography was perfected to fit with the message that the dancers were aiming at communicating. The costumes and the lighting also enhanced the performance and attached emotion to the performance.
Section 5. Lesson
What did you learn from the performance?
I learned that human relationships are important and that life has different phases. The first two performers portray the importance of human relationships and the frustrations and sadness that come with broken relationships. I have also learned that emotions can be relayed through performance and not necessarily through words.
