Perspectives on Marriage
1. Hosea was obsessed on Gomer because of her beauty and obsession cannot be equated to love if it is an attachment to the physical beauty of a person. Hosea’s commitment to Gomer is the kind of love that did not involve sexual intimacy since it was more on how to redeem her and prevent her from becoming a prostitute. The religious significance of Hosea’s commitment to Gomer is based on his sexual desires, but to honor her as a woman and earn her own self-respect.
2. Human love is the most basic sacrament because it is the greatest gift that two persons can give to each other. The love between two persons will require the complete commitment and fidelity between a man and a woman. In the case of a husband and wife, they become united through love, which cannot just be considered as a fleeting emotion or an erotic inclination which is selfishly pursued.
3. Christian marriage in the modern time means that man and woman are equal partners. A marriage ceremony in other countries does not require the physical presence of the partners since some jurisdictions allow marriage by proxy. In fact, there are also same sex marriages that have been allowed in some countries, which only show that the concept of marriage has evolved over time.
4. Legalizing gay marriages does not weaken the family since same-sex couples have the capacity to keep and maintain lasting and loving intimate relationships of married couples. A gay marriage does not pose harm or threat to society. Allowing same-sex marriages in the community will promote equality of each individual. Some countries have allowed gay couple to get since they believe that it will strengthen the importance of marriage in every person and the community as well. The marriage laws nowadays have allowed same-sex marriages to recognize the right of every person to be live happily with their partners for the rest of their lives. Some lawmakers in other countries have taken a neutral stand by recognizing the sexual orientation of every citizen. A gay marriage does not weaken the family since it promotes equality among all individuals since all members of the society is treated in a just and fair manner
5. At present, I can say that the people of my age resist the psychological transition of married mutuality from “I” to “we”. This is the psychological transition that is strongly resisted by young people since they do not understand the concept of fidelity and becoming one his or her partner. The Bible has taught the powerful image of union between a man and a woman as they unite from bone to bone and flesh to flesh. These expressions denote that two people become one in marriage. Romantic love among young couples these days can refer to fleeting emotions influenced by physical attraction and sexual desires (Grenz & Glover, 2003).
However, the Bible teaches that marriage should focus on the everlasting love that grows and is tested over time. For traditional couples many of the wives have given up their ambition, values and opinions and decided to become submissive to their husbands. The union of man and woman means that the husband’s decision will dominate the wife. In our modern time, not all young married couples are ready to embrace this traditional psychological transition due to women empowerment and equality of sexes, which can often lead to divorce (Grenz & Glover, 2003).
