“12 years a slave” by Steve McQueen and “Django unchained” by Quentin Tarantino are the great movies telling us about the slavery. Both of them are well written and have famous actors staring in those movies. However I would like to draw attention to the main points of the movie production in general and to compare the cinematography, sound and special effects, montage in these movies.
Starting with “12 years a slave”, this movie was written after the memoire by Solomon Northup in 1855, and was based on a true story. After watching this movie I can tell for sure that everybody who worked on did a very good job. Let’s take a better look at the cinematography of “12 years a slave”. Sean Bobbit was a cinematographer and the main operator. He shot this movie on 35mm film and also used a widescreen aspect ratio. Thanks to that, while watching this movie we couldn’t but notice the great quality.
Another interesting fact is that filmmakers used the real pieces of clothes that were worn by slaves. Sounds effects used in this movie perfectly reflect the feeling that the main characters have, feelings that the audience experience. The sound is everywhere. We can hear and actually feel this sound through the whole movie, starting with the working songs that the slaves were singing, the reading of scripture by slave-owners, up to the sound of Northup’s feet sticking in the mud. Sound is there all the time. The director puts all his heart and effort in the movie “12 years a slave” Steve made this movie breathe. It doesn’t matter what part of the movie we are watching, what actor is in the scene we cannot take our eye off it.
“Django unchained” is another great movie about slavery. It is the western by Quentin Tarantino with a lot of famous actors in it. Tarantino works perfectly with all his projects. After watching the film I can remember every character even the minor roles like white people that were watching the slaves working in the plantations. The main Hollywood fighter for justice, not overshadowed by ethics moral, was shooting western. Anyone who is familiar with early Tarantino and spaghetti western master Sergio Corbucci , one name in the title Django tells that Tarantino finally found his lead. All of the Tarantino movies were edited by Sally Menke except this one, because she died in 2010, but the we can see that the new editor did a good job putting all his soul and efforts in “Django unchained”. The movie was shot in the anamorphic format on the 35mm film. The costumes that were used in this movie were picked out very well. “Vanity fair” costume designer was also the costume designer of “Django unchained” she was very inspired by the spaghetti western and wanted to be a part of this movie as well. Costume designers spent a lot of time creating costumes that will represent that time the best of all. The movie has very strong sounds effects. Soundtracks in Tarantino’s movies are more than great they are superb. In this movie we can find already exciting tracks as well as some original ones. The soundtrack “Django” is classic. As for me, it is not possible to imagine this movie without it. At the very first sound of it you know, you feel - that’s the beginning, everything is going to start right now. Filming the movies based on a true story, historical movies you have to be very careful in order not to make a lot of stupid mistakes. I have found several inappropriate mistakes in “Django unchained”. The most interesting are:
They have used dynamite in the movie, but it was only invented in 1867, which is 9 years later the events described in the film.
Kelvin’s villa had a copy of the Nefertiti’s bust. Events in the movie took place in 1858, while the bust was found only after 1912. Interesting!
