Reading through the story Giovanna’s 86 Circles by Paola Corso, one only notices the potential that exists within a person. The story of Giovanna is one that shows the potential and capabilities of this old woman who defied all odds and gave so much to society more than anybody else could. The same is replicated in the lives of these young lovers who are not sure they know how to kiss, or express affection towards one another. But in the end, they can kiss not like licking a postage stamp, but allow their hearts resonate through a moment of love. The abilities of a person that are engraved in their personalities only come out when they are dared.
Looking at how much the two lovers know about kissing, tells the reader that they have a clue that there is always a first time for everything. It is just that people are never willing to take the first step. Fortunately, for Mrs. Calderone, it becomes clear that there is always a possibility where there seems none. How she was able to water her garden, and potted plants show that when one reaches deep down themselves and pushes themselves a little harder (Corso 55), they can even surprise themselves.
In this world, people are often encouraged to work hard to achieve good results. Joey had to commit himself to telling Sally he loved her, and a boy had to give a girl ring to show their commitment. But kissing them was a sign of intimacy that Marty and the narrator did not know. The story concludes with a perfect kiss, one that elicits inner feelings. The bottom line sits that anything is possible as long as a person commits themselves to achieving it. It takes a little effort.
