A proverb can be defined as a brief statement of a general purpose. Most of the time, a proverb intends to give an advice on certain issues. Other words used in place of a proverb include; adage, saying, maxim, axiom, epigram, aphorism, and dictum, among many others. Most people use proverbs to emphasize a point or challenge someone/group of individuals in the quest to taste their intellectual prowess. Also, proverbs carry deeper words associated with wisdom. For this reason, Proverbs are an important aspect for cultural heritage and language development. This paper discusses on the proverb “Time you enjoy wasting is not time wasted” highlighting scenarios where the saying applies.
“Time you enjoy wasting is not time wasted” is a common English saying. Understanding the proverb is a simple as its meaning is quite literal. The essence of this statement is that when a person does what they find enjoyable however useless, it may seem to others, the activity is just as valuable as any other important task. Most people use it to encourage others to pursue their dreams and not worry about them being insufficient. What matters most is that they are enjoying the activity, and they derive some benefits from it.
Our society seems to define our lives and our business to a great extent. Various tasks are considered to be worthwhile while others get viewed as a waste of time. For this reason, most people get forced into participating in events or activities they do not enjoy. They do this to conform to societal beliefs or simply because it is a requirement. Otherwise, if given the choice, they would pursue other things all together. Moreover, they opt out of doing what they desire due to the fear of ridicule. This ridicule is as a result of other people considering their activity of interest as silly or a waste of time. Such a situation should not be the case. I believe that people should be able to pursue whatever ambition or activity of their interest as long as it brings them joy and fulfillment.
When people are allowed to seek their interests without being made to feel as though they are wasting time, they find a way of expressing their creative energy. This self-expression enables people to achieve their full potential and unleash their wildest imaginations through their freedom. The freedom to experiment and use time as one desire leads to innovation and invention. Most inventors of groundbreaking technologies throughout recorded history, made inventions during their free time away from distractions. History suggests that most scientists were introverts who enjoyed being alone and left to their own devices. The majority of the people around them felt that they were lazy and jobless individuals who were of no benefit to the society. However, their discoveries were very crucial in enhancing the quality of life and made it much easier and bearable.
Albert Einstein once said, "Everybody is a genius, but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, then it will live its whole life thinking that it is stupid." This statement holds true. Different people have different talents and hobbies. For this reason, they might prefer doing some activities over others. So it is imperative that people pursue their interests even if they appear to be a waste of time.
For example, some youngsters might focus more on their hobbies and skills. In the meantime, they pay less attention to school and their education. Their hobbies can include activities such as sports. Though their parents might consider the activity as a waste of time, the child derives pleasure from the activity. In fact, if the child takes the sport seriously, he or she might become a professional in that sport. We all know the perks of being a professional sportsman. They earn a lot of money, fame and all other good things in life that most people desire. Some people might opt out of jobs or even school to pursue a simple activity such as playing a musical instrument. Such an action would be considered unreasonable and irrational by many. However, these individuals might excel in their hobby and become season instrument players who get invited to musical events and shows. People might even start valuing their opinions about music and musical instruments. One might find that previously many considered such people to be a bunch of time wasting idlers.
Other people might just enjoy traveling for the sake of it. Even though it seems like a waste of time and money, they get to experience new places. They also learn more about the plants and animals in different regions. In the case of international travel, they learn about different races and cultures all around the world. This knowledge is precious. In fact, it is much more enriching than knowledge obtained from the classroom. Since the traveler gets to experience real places and situations, the knowledge they retain the knowledge they got much easily and for a longer period. Knowledge obtained from books and videos quickly gets forgotten compared to knowledge obtained first hand.
Other people might not like to undertake any tasks. All they want to do is to hang out with friends and meet new people. Through socialization, they get to build their interpersonal skills. They learn how to interact with different types of personalities. Furthermore, they enhance their personalities through self-expression. Social people tend to be less lonely. For this reason, they do not undergo the effects of loneliness. Such effects include anxiety, depression and hopelessness. They can make more friends and expand their circles. A larger circle means that they are more connected and can easily get assistance in time of need. The assistance can either be regarding resources or moral support with the reason being that they know someone who knows someone. They also derive entertainment from hanging out with friends and participating in social activities that excite them.
Indeed, the time we enjoy wasting is not time wasted at all. When we do what we love, many benefits accrue.
