1. Please list two goals that you have for yourself right now.
The reason why I want to study supply chain management is not only because this program is ranked at number one position in the US but also because this is the field that I really want to work in. It is my aim to excel in the supply management field. Time management is the key to success in all fields today. The firm that ships materials on time or better even before time gets the edge. For some people who are not familiar with SCM, they may think it is simply shipping something to some place, but actually it is way more complicated than it sounds. SCM not only requires basic packing skills, but it also needs people who have management skills that can make the shipping more efficient and quick. As the customer requires the cost and efficiency report, finance and accounting skills are also very important for SCM. After 4 years of undergraduate studies I will learn the basic knowledge of SCM. When I have enough experience, I need to find a way to put my experience and knowledge together. I think the best way to improve myself is getting a master’s degree; that will give me a chance to improvise along with achieving my goal. I wish to have my own Supply Chain Company and dream of making it public in China.
My parents are running their own company and that is the reason why I want to get in to the Eli broad business school. Currently there are only a few companies that works on real supply management model, the rest just have normal logistics wherein factory and storage are done by the third party. I plan to utilize this imperfect market as a chance to import the US supply chain system to China. I can alter it to adapt it to Chinas low mechanization and complex transportation. It will provide solution to those companies who need to supply chain system, reduce their cost and make shipment more effective.
2. I am proud and excited to be accepted and given an offer by the Michigan State University. I did not want to study in an international high school just for the sake of studying abroad. My aim is to learn and add to my knowledge. I believe that hard work is the sole criteria for success. I had started preparing when I was a senior in high school. I had only nine months to study for TOFEL and SAT. During this had I set up a goal for myself and worked on it day and night. My perseverance and dedication silenced many. I continued with my school along with my preparation for TOFEL and SAT. I am proud myself that I faced the obstacles and came out as a winner. I believe hard work is very important for all paths of life. Especially for people who want to work in the management level, the higher level the more the work pressure.
I got the chance of playing saxophone solo as a chief saxophone player in the school band in Chinas national theatre in front of 2000 people, an achievement I will always cherish. I have been playing the instrument since I was eight. Music is my healing and energizing source. I play at the Park and subway every day. Practicing and performing daily in front of people help me overcome my stage fear and boosted my confidence.
I am satisfied that I could adapt so well to the university life in US. It’s not easy to come to a country that is totally different to your native culture and adapt to it. It might sound like a little detail to many but students coming from abroad do have a hard time initially while adjusting in USA. I am from China, having lived there for eighteen years. I have my family, home and friends there. Studying abroad is tough mentally as I do miss my family but my aim puts me in the right frame of mind and keeps reminding me of my higher goals. English is my second language and is really hard to understand unlike for the native students. My initial scores were low, 2.6 GPA. The low score motivated me to perform better and I studied hard. I know I can do better and I am continuously working on it as I believe nothing is impossible. To improve my English I studied the subject during my first summer break. And finally at the end of second year I had an increased GPA of 3.1.It means a lot to me as it was a new language. I have stared enjoying my new found independence. The new environment does not scare me anymore. It’s essential for me as it will help me in adapting to different work conditions later in my professional life as a SCM. I would have to travel a lot as my profile would require me to do it.
3. I have done an internship in a company by the name “Le Feng.” It is an online shopping web site that is focused on sailing women’s make up product. I was working in their supply chain department as manager assistant. “Le Feng” is not a big company like Amazon or eBay, but it is one of the few companies that really have the supply chain system in China. The company gave me a chance to know what about the intricacies of real supply chain management. I had a life time opportunity to work in the warehouse; it was the most enriching experience for me. I can easily use the computer and software to manage the supply chain but needed to really understand how it works. Working in the warehouse helped me get that knowledge. Most people believe that management is all about office work; but actually for efficient management one needs to know how to do all the processes involved in the supply chain. I know the entire process of supply chain, not only on paper but also practically. Search engines like Google search and Wikipedia can give information only about the theoretical part; for the practical and professional world on hand experience is essential
