Classical Argument Essay against Abortion
Specific Audience: Pro-Choice (Abortion)
In the contemporary times, the debate over the legalization of abortion has been a hot concern in the American society. Even though the United States Supreme Court declared abortion as a fundamental right in 1973 on Roe v. Wade 7-2 decision (Rose 91), this procedure is still gravely disapproved by many. According to the advocates of abortion, abortion is an exclusive human right that must not be restricted by ant religious authority or governmental body. Their argument is based on the assumption that illegalization of abortion would ultimately make pregnant women choose insecure illegal abortions as an alternative. In fact, such pro-choice groups encourage abortion by stressing that a fetus or embryo has no basic right to choose. On the other hand, opponents of abortion, also called pro-life, believe that it is from the conception stage that personhood begins. According to their perspective, abortion is not a fundamental right but a ‘morally wrong’ murder of a naive human being. Pro-life contend that abortion is a direct means to cause suffering to an unborn human being. As far as my opinion is concerned, I am strongly against the use of abortive methods as it is extremely unfair to permit abortion when there are thousands and thousands of couples who are unable to conceive through biological means and seek adoption.
There are a number of reasons abortion needs to be abolished as a fundamental right. To begin with, it is killing an innocent human being which is undoubtedly wrong. It needs to be stated that the United States government considers unborn babies as human beings. In contrast, the legalization of abortion permits the killing of a human being. Unborn Victims of Violence Act was propounded for providing protection to unborn children from any kind of physical suffering including murder and assault. The same act considers children as members of Homo sapiens species (Stringer 43). In fact, about thirty-eight states in the United States have passed laws pertaining fetal homicide to punish any person who is involved in abortion. It needs to be understood that reproductive choice for empowering women is a ridiculous concept. Abortion does not empower women in any way. In fact, unborn babies are human beings who enjoy a similar right of life as enjoyed by any other born human beings.
It is believed by pro-choice that fetuses do not live as independent beings. According to these proponents, personhood begins after the birth and a fetus is determined to be a human being from the date of birth. On the other hand, medical research reveals that a fetus is able to detect pain during the first trimester (Feinberg & Feinberg 79). Therefore, it is ridiculous to not assume unborn children as human beings. I believe that abortion is a direct defiance of the God’s words. The deliberate destruction of a life is, without a doubt, a direct immoral deed. No religion asks its followers to get rid of the unborn children in any circumstances. If the truth is told, every religion requires its followers to protect the fetus and an infant equally. This is because even an unborn child is recognized by the God to be His creation.
As mentioned above, I condemn abortion and related methods as they lessen the number of babies that could be adopted after their birth. I strongly believe that instead of choosing abortion, people should give their unwanted infants to couples who are not fortunate enough to conceive and have children of their own. It is rather unfortunate that there are innumerable couples who yearn for babies; yet there are many who use abortion to get rid of their children. In the present times, women seek empowerment through seeking employment opportunities. They wish for financial strength instead of having babies. However, it is a shame to pursue career and abort an innocent baby. I believe that women need to accept that their primary role is to be a mother and not to become the employee of a company. Adults make mistakes by having sexual intercourses. Instead of taking the responsibility for their actions, they abort babies. This needs to be stopped. Even if a woman is not ready to take the responsibility of a child, she must not abort it. Giving the baby up for adoption is a far better alternative.
In addition, the disposability of human life is encouraged through abortion. In other words, abortion promotes that a human life has actually no worth. It is an inopportune fact that abortion legalization sends a message that an unborn, unwanted child can be thrown away just like other disposable items. The modern technological era has blinded people to such an extent that people are ready to throw away anything that causes inconvenience to them including babies.
