The article by Amy describes an immigrant Chinese girl who migrated to U.S.A and struggles with two different cultures. Furthermore, the relationship is odd between Amy and her mother who is considered to be immoral. Amy’s mother sees her brilliant while the daughter refuses to buy her mother‘s point of view. Amy is going throw bicultural phenomenon that creates a conflict that influences her reactions towards her mother and the discrepancy in their ideologies, beliefs and values.
The Protagonist’ smother wants her daughter to be a prodigy girl who has a natural ability to master whatever she has been taught or told by her mother . Amy” points out that “sometimes the prodigy of me becomes impatient”. She continues to say that this natural ability is a conflict between doing her mother’s will and hope and compromising her inner feelings. This conflict leaves her with a dilemma of choosing the best way To follow whether to be forced to sing her mother tune of smartness to every idea taught or heard from her mother and be successful in all aspect of her life, or to search for her separate identity, ability and find out what is suitable and best as a bicultural child who is raised in different environment other than that of her mother. This explains that Amy has a unique character that contributes to the conflict for equilibrium relationships.
Forcing to learn and adopt an activity or education in which the children dislikes, could generate a negative attitude that the child may develop to his or her parents , who are shape and governors of the children ability towards some activity that may not seem interesting to their kids. Amy is a child who was forced by her mother to learn how to play instruments such as piano as pointed out by the displeased narrator. Such forces may lead to a child rebellion against her parents as seen in the case of Amy and her mother where Amy Points out that “I won’t let her change me, I promised myself. I won’t be what I’m not”. (p.147}. Amy’ expression is seen as an interpretation between her inner feelings and thoughts that led her to restructure her life as an independent girl. She concludes that she will draw herself to different path that defines her destiny, that is not controlled by her mother’s hope, and that denies her of personality and ability.
Ultimately, the children should be treated as the way that their environment altered their behavior such us the bi cultural children who excrescencies different cultural background from that of their parents. Putting pressures to the children to learn some activity or be educated in some fields that may not delight them, could lead to negative consequences to the parents and the child. The way every parent should treat their children is not by forcing them but by trying to find the key point that lead to their children happiness.
