I have always loved being a student, and academics have always been something that I pursue intently. The Chinese educational system is quite different from the American one, but there is one difference that is particularly important: it is the gaokao, or the national test that allows Chinese students into different universities. I knew from early in my secondary school career that I wanted to go to school in the United States of America, so rather than focus on studying for this test, I chose to study hard in other areas. By the end of my secondary school career, I was ranked first in mathematics in the school—learning mathematics, to me, was always just an extension of my interest in science and discovery.
I am very interested in Engineering as a career because it allows me to integrate my knowledge of mathematics with a more practical knowledge of science. I also know that in the modern business world, being able to interact with people from all different cultures is important—I believe that going to UGA will help me learn to better interact with people from western cultures, but it will also give the western students at UGA a better chance to get to know a Chinese student, as there are many more Chinese individuals and companies entering the market today. I feel that this cultural exchange is a very important part of higher education, and I also feel that I would not necessarily have gotten the same amount of exposure to different people and cultures if I had chosen to go to university in China. I hope to use my time at UGA as a time for personal and professional growth.
