I have always considered that the person who invented society was probably the greatest genius ever living on earth. Social norms, human relationships, communication, collaboration, progress, society, they are all part of a political system. Excepting the abstract concepts such as love, happiness or virtue, everything in the world, locally or globally, at micro level, or at macro level, is political. The dynamics and particularities of the international political scene fascinate me. It is with great interest that I follow the socio-political concepts integrated in the speeches or strategies of politicians or in the pleads and defenses of the lawyers. Besides the political ideologies, which I find extremely exciting, I am also highly moved and captured by the oratorical talent and solid argumentations of sound speakers. Needless to say that I occupy a great amount of time with watching debates, legal cases and analyzing the lawyers’ argumentations or closing pleads. This interest towards law and political science shaped my behavior, my language and my personality. I often find myself, even when I am amongst friends, arguing casual issues, using persuasiveness, diplomacy and fundaments of political ideologies, emphasizing human values, human rights, or defending human weaknesses. Because my passion for political sciences contributed to shaping my personality, I am currently pursuing an education within West Valley College majoring in Political Sciences, and I aim to achieve the transfer to University of California, wherein I want to continue majoring Political Sciences.
While I am mesmerized by the art of political science, which gathered influences from Ancient Greek and Roman philosophies and other schools of thought across time becoming what it is today, I am nevertheless astounded by its engagement into presence and the nowadays reality. The paradox of politics is that although it is continuously developing, adjusting to the ever-changing modern world, its structure is basically unchanged since the ancient times.
My interest in politics started in adolescence, when I vividly began to analyze political content. Later on, driven by my passion for politics and aiming to develop a career in political science, I applied and was admitted at the West Valley College, majoring in Political Sciences. I entered the Honors Program within this educational institution, demonstrating excellent public speaking, argumentation and persuasiveness, but also concrete applications of political science concepts. I have continued to pursue my interest towards political science, with the purpose of pursuing a legal career, in everything I did: in my work, in community relations, among my friends or in my family. I embraced each opportunity for debating, defending or arguing ideas, which served me as a practical exercise of rehearsing and improving my oratorical and rhetorical skills.
Aware of the role of communication in the political arena, I have developed both oral and written presentation skills across time, handling various tasks in my previous professional engagements. I have gained very good abilities and knowledge of creating flyers and advertisements, highlighting the significant aspects for making the communication appealing to the targeted public. Politics incorporates elements of advertising and leadership, required for alluring and convincing people of the utility of specific programs. I am attracted by this aspect and through my previous employments as an Executive Assistant or Assistant Manager I have highlighted and maximized my communication, presentation and leadership skills. I know that these skills are required for being a successful Political Science student and for further becoming a lawyer, which shapes my career plan. After graduating from University of California, I plan to continue my studies by attending the Law School for formalizing my skills.
Arguing, debating and influencing people through the use of rhetorical elements make me who I am. Logical arguments, accurate information (logos), clean and attractive presentations (ethos) and passionate speeches (pathos) are the three pillars of rhetoric that I wish to master in my legal practice. Aristotle’s three rhetorical levels were accurate more than two thousand years ago, are topical today and will continue to be used in the legal speeches and as a practice within political science in general for the time to come. These everlasting valid elements of the speech are highly required in the practice of a future lawyer, one who besides the code of practice is highly confident with the art of argumentation and takes great pleasure in practicing it.
I already possess strong skills in this direction, but I consider that attending the courses of UC would bring me closer my career goal. The open environment, the high focus on the quality of the classes and the practical involvement of the tutors in providing the students real life situations attract me towards UC. In addition, this institution has also a great potential of preparing students for career opportunity or new educational paths, after graduation.
Majoring in Political Science is significant for my endeavored lawyer career. Knowing, understanding and applying the codes of the constitution is an important theoretical aspect that I aim to polish within UC. Because this institution also incorporates practical model of practice, I will also have the opportunity to learn how to apply the constitution in my future lawyer profession.
Learning the political science concepts and ideologies, accumulating a vast experience in gaining facts and theories while applying official codes and regulations for consolidating arguments is a science. Succeeding in convincing an auditorium of a defended case is an art. Therefore, I intend to focus my studies on Political Science, attending the classes taught within UC, while pursuing a continuous self-actualization by exercising the art of persuasion in every possible situation.
Practical experience in political science is crucially important and I plan to thoroughly analyze case studies, to participate in public debates, in Court actions, and to volunteer within nongovernmental organizations that require political science and legal practice.
Being a lawyer is my realistic dream. I live with the aspiration of becoming an imposing lawyer, defending private cases in Court, where I would have the power of persuading audiences, through reasoned argumentations, ethical presentations and passionate speeches. I have high hopes of receiving the transfer within your reputable academic institution. It is my objective to learn the teachings of the fathers of political science, from Cicero and Plato to Spinoza and Immanuel Kant to current influencers. I know that by putting the theory into practice I will gain higher accuracy, precision, comprehension and consistency within my speech, which will prepare me for my targeted career goal of becoming a lawyer. Joining University of California would represent a personal and professional achievement for me, which I will maximize through hard work and passionate involvement.
I wish to thank you for your time in analyzing my transfer request. It would be my great honor to become a student with Political Science Major within UC.
Sincerely,
