The conflict of ethical rules and regulations between the government and business occurs due to the continuous changes in the society. Business always tries to adapt to any changes and follow the new instructions. Instead, business requires the ability to act independently. If the government provides such freedom, everything is fine. Otherwise, the clash between companies and authorities is inevitable.
Chapter 11: DQ #3:
Give an example of a major abuse of advertising from your own observations and experiences. How do you feel about this as a consumer?
It is a very tricky question. On the one hand, such adverts allow getting the access to the paid services provided you watch it within several minutes. However, regarding the ethical issues, it is totally unacceptable to bomb the consumers with the clips of people drinking, smoking, making sex or fighting to propose something. Mainly teenagers can be easily influenced by such advertisements.
Chapter 13: DQ #2:
The ecological issue is very actual nowadays. The current condition of ozone layer puts the humanity on the brink of extinction. The global warming is a problem to which all mass media devote much time. Also, the reduction of natural resources, the limited amount of fresh water, harmful emissions of fuel, cutting down forests, endangered species, landfills and nuclear wastes receive much attention from the society.
Chapter 14: DQ #4:
In your opinion, why does a business have a responsibility to community stakeholders in a business-closing decision? Enumerate what you think are the major reasons.
Community stakeholders guarantee that all employees will be treated fair and square despite the age, the term of experience and the positions. In a case of the closing of plants, all workers should receive the severance package and compensation. Moreover, community stakeholders guarantee the compensation in the event of the maternity leave and sick days. The business makes the profit, but, at the same time, bears the responsibilities for the safety and security of the employees. Thus, businesses should cooperate with the social agents - community stakeholders.
Chapter 16: DQ #6:
Which of the four guidelines on the issue of privacy presented in this chapter do you think are the most important? Why?
Each employee has the right to be in safety regarding his personal details. Therefore, each employer should request only those data that is necessary. Moreover, he takes the responsibility to keep the information carefully and not to sell it to the other services. The information about each employee should be placed into the separate file. Finally, each worker has the right to get the access to the information whenever he needs.
Chapter 17: DQ #5:
This question does not have the only one answer. Many groups are deserving the preferences regarding the admission to the university. There are students raised in single-parent families, representatives from the minorities, people with the significant achievements, etc. Who deserves the most is the issue to discuss in the class. It would be fascinating to know what students think about it.
Chapter 18: DQ #2:
What are the major criticisms of boards of directors? Which single criticism do you find to be the most important? Why?
The first person on the board is CEO. He dominates the board. The rest staff is subjective to him. Thus, the board is not able to make 100% fair decisions. The board is a rubber stamp of management’s decisions. The CEO dominates the board. The members of the board can promote and pursue their interests. Set the question to the open-class discussion. It will be interesting to know the opinion of the majority.
