What do you think of Kachru’s model?
Braj Kachru’s model depicts English as a plural language in that, one variety of English gives rise to many English varieties thanks to the expanding circles. This then puts all the varieties on the same level as long as all varieties are used to achieve a common goal. None of them is any better than another. According to this model, this has resulted to the development of many varieties, and none of them is transplanted from one place to another.
Of Jenkins’s critique of it
Jenkins’ critique of Kachru’s model seeks to bring forth the inefficiencies attributed to it. In fact, the issue of competence is not well brought out in the Kachru model thereby Jenkins seeks to show that there is no uniformity in the various varieties that exist. She, therefore, brings out the inefficiencies that exist in this model.
Of McArthur’s model
This circle brings to focus the ideal English which, is the ‘World Standard English’ and then the regional standards which are followed by the localized varieties of English. It is generalizing just like the Kachru Model and pits none of them as superior to the other.
Of recent thinking about the ENL user/non-ENL user divide?
It is true as said by David Graddol that the divisions between the ENL users and non- ENL user divide be discarded. The levels of competence vary regardless of whether one is a native speaker or not. There are non- native speakers who have higher levels of competence than native speakers, and it is for this reason that it is not easy to differentiate between ENL and non- ENL users. It is, therefore, important to look at the competence in the various varieties as good as in the Standard English.
