What Makes the Brain ‘Tick?’
The human brain is a very complex organ that controls each and every function of the human body. Without its proper functioning and control, the body can suffer adversely. The brain makes decisions for the body, is responsible for making the personality of a person, helping in making judgments and preserving the memory of the person. Moreover, the human brain is also responsible for the abstract concept of thinking that cannot be defined very accurately. Yet every person with a normal brain has a strong thought process.
There were many things that were unknown to me before going through this activity. For instance, the diencephalon is a part of the brain that forms the core of the brain is a major component of the brain. The core of the brain happens to be the part of the brain that contains several complex structures. There are two apricot-like structures present in this part of the brain known as the thalamus and the hypothalamus. The thalamus takes messages from all parts of the brain and diverts them to the region where they are processed whereas the hypothalamus is the region that produces hormones. (National Geographic, 2016).
I also came to know an interesting fact that praising a person activates the frontal lobe of the brain which thus serves as the emotional center of the brain which makes a person responsible for shaping their personality. It is also responsible for helping a person make decisions and to carry out plans thus it serves as an important part of the brain that carries out the thought process. (National Geographic, 2016).
Thirdly, the frontal lobe is a multipurpose lobe which is also activated by feelings of love and sexual desire and it is activated to pursue and exhibit sexual behavior. This region also influences the social behavior and act of socialization in people. (National Geographic, 2016).
Studying the human brain is important in understanding psychology because psychology is all about the human mind and its processes cannot be understood without a proper knowledge of the parts of the brain and its functioning. As psychology helps to provide an understanding of the functioning of the brain and the mental illnesses or diseases, then it is essential to know which part of the brain causes a certain predicament. For example, the limbic system in the human brain motivates the behavior, emotions and the memory process in people. Therefore, if a person suffers from a psychological disorder that shows abnormal behavior or distorted emotions and loss of memory, then it can be determined which part of the brain is causing the disorder. It can also help to find the cure. Psychology can thus be better understood if it is studied in accordance with the anatomy and knowledge of the human brain as a biological organ. (Learner.org, 2016).
Psychological disorders can be incurred by anyone at any period in life. They can be present from birth, and they can also be incurred later on in life. Psychological disorders like Alzheimer’s, Autism, Down’s Syndrome, and many others can be found in many people all over the world. One psychological disorder present in famous people is Autism, which is a very complex and strange disorder in which a person is usually of the average of extremely high intelligence. A very famous example of the scientific genius and legend, Albert Einstein can be taken as a case of Autism. Einstein was an autistic boy who suffered from shyness and facing society and usually cowered away from the children at school, avoiding them and staying to himself. Yet he turned out to be a brilliant physicist who changed the way people viewed science and made many discoveries in the field. The main cause of autism is the lack of connections in the brain that convey sensory information. This affects personality and social behavior the most and such people are shy from making eye contact. (Disabled World, 2016).
