The 1920’s was the time of Prohibition, which means a prohibition of alcohol, that were considered intoxicating drinks. The manufacturers were closed as well as many bars, pubs or saloons. But the liquor trade went underground making ‘bathtube’ gin or similar products at home. It was quite easy to make and it was possible to drink it right away, which made it easy for distribution of the drink.
Who was Al “scarface” Capone and what did he do?
Such illegal operations as making and selling alcohol in the city was controlled and protected by well-known criminal figures. For example, in Chicago it was Al Capone. He was a gangster, who reached unprecedented power in the city having a huge gang in the city, a big part of them worked in Chicago’s police department covering all of Al Capone’s doings.
What is a “speakeasy”?
Al Capone controlled Chicago’s speakeasies, which were illegal underground bars where people could drink.
What is a “flapper”?
Flapper is one of the most famous symbols of the twenties, it is connected with the change of woman’s image is culture. A young woman wearing short hair and short skirt and showing off her ‘unalady’ behavior could be called flapper. Flapper also characterized by drinking and smoking girls who considered themselves sexually ‘free’, although it only meant that they were more ‘free’ compared to the previous generations. It was also reflected in their new constitutional freedoms, like 19th Amendment.
What is a “tin lizzie”?
«Tin Lizzie» is a colloquial name for Ford car — The Model T. The creator, Henry Ford, changed manufacturing process completely, staring from the assembly-lines in his company. This model became affordable for most of Americans because of the much lower manufacturing costs.
